I mean it this time, my last DBF purchase. I said this before but I was tempted by the title and the cover and bought the book. Before I could continue with my review I had to choose between predictable, some twists or full of surprises...I wish it had offered mind numbing and mundane. This book is HORRIBLE. The characters are boring and one-dimensional, the dialog extremely uninteresting, there are editing errors, just overall disappointing...AND who needs to know what the woman cooks for each meal?!!! I made it to page 83 and have discarded the book, no it's not even a give away, I would not do this to anyone I like! What has happened to Ms. Benton-Frank? The Ms. Benton-Frank that wrote Pawley's Island, Shem Creek...the Last Original Wife. I can't imagine giving this book 5 stars even if I had received it for free! I paid in full for it but I promise anyone reading this review, this is my last purchase of Ms. Benton-Frank's books.
I have loved DBF's earlier books. They have consistently lost substance. This one is boring and predictable. So sorry to have spent money on this one.
Very disappointed, again. In my opinion the storyline was trite, predictable, and completely lacking in substance, to say the least. It was difficult to invest in the characters-- they were very cliche and one-dimensional.It appears that it is the author's "goal" to churn out a book per year~ perhaps that is much too lofty a goal? It seems that more time should be taken to develop the characters, as well as the premise of the story in which they are involved-- and if that process takes MORE than a year to complete, so be it-- the result would be better for the author AND the readers! And, as a side note, it would probably behoove the author to eat prior to writing (just as it is advised that people eat prior to grocery shopping, so that they aren't throwing EVERYTHING that looks tempting to their empty stomach into the cart!). Almost every book written by this author is dragged down with overly-detailed descriptions of food (starting from 'what' is purchased, to how it is prepared, eaten, and cleared away), none of which serves any meaningful purpose, or adds anything of interest to the story (three words that come to mind: monotonous, boring, and irrelevant!). Perhaps the author's next writing project should be a cookbook that would appeal to the food-obsessed?!
Dorthea Benton Frank is one of my favorite southern authors. But this book was lightweight and boring. Her characters were silly and superficial. I kept hoping she would move the story along or at least offer a surprise but she continued with cliche after cliche. I imagine writing about the same area for years can become repetitive and cliched but she was able to create quirky characters with southern touches that were interesting. The characters in her latest book are merely annoying and unpleasant. Ms Benton Frank needs to channel her writing mentors for inspiration. Her loyal fans deserve better.
I enjoyed this book as a light beach read very much The story and the characters though float along as unbelievable and too close in too short a time I appreciated the sense of family the charecters had but kept thinking this really isisn't that interesting as so many of her novels have been in the pastThe men are just too stupid to believe and the women don't resonate as realI kept reading hoping the book would get better - like her past novels but it didn'tI have loved her past work and hope she decides to write a really interestinng story next time
I love this author but this book, same beach, next year not so much. The characters are one dimensional and frankly, I didn't like any of them very much except Adam and Eliza's twin sons. It just didn't seem to flow. There is too much going on and I just didn't think the characters were well developed. There were too many plots and too much going on. This one missed the mark for me.
Another book about a fairly spineless woman and her self-centered husband, compounded by the husband's old girlfriend. We are all supposed to applaud when the wife finally stops being a doormat. I just reread The Last Original Wife before this, and this couple is Les and Wes in a watered down form, with a miraculous trip to find the meaning of life after a big revelation that would only shock a total idiot.
The title is misleading to begin with. This story drug on and on with no real purpose most of the time. If these people were my neighbors, I would die of boredom. A friend was considering purchasing the hardback but was waiting to see how liked my download. Unfortunately, I will be telling her to save her money on this one. Reading it was like watching a bad, made for TV movie. I kept thinking it would get better, I was very wrong.
