Amazon.com Review

From the very start of its very first scene, The Amber Spyglass will set hearts fluttering and minds racing. All we'll say here is that we immediately discover who captured Lyra at the end of The Subtle Knife, though we've yet to discern whether this individual's intent is good, evil, or somewhere in between. We also learn that Will still possesses the blade that allows him to cut between worlds, and has been joined by two winged companions who are determined to escort him to Lord Asriel's mountain redoubt. The boy, however, has only one goal in mind--to rescue his friend and return to her the alethiometer, an instrument that has revealed so much to her and to readers of The Golden Compass and its follow-up. Within a short time, too, we get to experience the "tingle of the starlight" on Serafina Pekkala's skin as she seeks out a famished Iorek Byrnison and enlists him in Lord Asriel's crusade: A complex web of thoughts was weaving itself in the bear king's mind, with more strands in it than hunger and satisfaction. There was the memory of the little girl Lyra, whom he had named Silvertongue, and whom he had last seen crossing the fragile snow bridge across a crevasse in his own island of Svalbard. Then there was the agitation among the witches, the rumors of pacts and alliances and war; and then there was the surpassingly strange fact of this new world itself, and the witch's insistence that there were many more such worlds, and that the fate of them all hung somehow on the fate of the child. Meanwhile, two factions of the Church are vying to reach Lyra first. One is even prepared to give a priest "preemptive absolution" should he succeed in committing mortal sin. For these tyrants, killing this girl is no less than "a sacred task." In the final installment of his trilogy, Philip Pullman has set himself the highest hurdles. He must match its predecessors in terms of sheer action and originality and resolve the enigmas he already created. The good news is that there is no critical bad news--not that The Amber Spyglass doesn't contain standoffs and close calls galore. (Who would have it otherwise?) But Pullman brings his audacious revision of Paradise Lost to a conclusion that is both serene and devastating. In prose that is transparent yet lyrical and 3-D, the author weaves in and out of his principals' thoughts. He also offers up several additional worlds. In one, Dr. Mary Malone is welcomed into an apparently simple society. The environment of the mulefa (again, we'll reveal nothing more) makes them rich in consciousness while their lives possess a slow and stately rhythm. These strange creatures can, however, be very fast on their feet (or on other things entirely) when necessary. Alas, they are on the verge of dying as Dust streams out of their idyllic landscape. Will the Oxford dark-matter researcher see her way to saving them, or does this require our young heroes? And while Mary is puzzling out a cure, Will and Lyra undertake a pilgrimage to a realm devoid of all light and hope, after having been forced into the cruelest of sacrifices--or betrayals. Throughout his galvanizing epic, Pullman sustains scenes of fierce beauty and tenderness. He also allows us a moment or two of comic respite. At one point, for instance, Lyra's mother bullies a series of ecclesiastical underlings: "The man bowed helplessly and led her away. The guard behind her blew out his cheeks with relief." Needless to say, Mrs. Coulter is as intoxicating and fluid as ever. And can it be that we will come to admire her as she plays out her desperate endgame? In this respect, as in many others, The Amber Spyglass is truly a book of revelations, moving from darkness visible to radiant truth. --Kerry Fried

From Publishers Weekly

In concluding the spellbinding His Dark Materials trilogy, Pullman produces what may well be the most controversial children's book of recent years. The witch Serafina Pekkala, quoting an angel, sums up the central theme: "All the history of human life has been a struggle between wisdom and stupidity. The rebel angels, the followers of wisdom, have always tried to open minds; the Authority and his churches have always tried to keep them closed." Early on, this "Authority" is explicitly identified as the Judeo-Christian God, and he is far from omnipotent: his Kingdom is ruled by a regent. The cosmic battle to overthrow the Kingdom is only one of the many epic sequences in this novelAso much happens, and the action is split among so many different imagined worlds, that readers will have to work hard to keep up with Pullman. In the opening, for example, Lyra is being hidden and kept in a drugged sleep in a Himalayan cave by her mother, the beautiful and treacherous Mrs. Coulter. Will is guided by two angels across different worlds to find Lyra. The physicist and former nun, Mary Malone, sojourns in an alternatively evolved world. In yet another universe, Lord Asriel has assembled a great horde of otherworldly beings-including the vividly imagined race of haughty, hand-high warriors called GallivespiansAto bring down the Kingdom. Along the way, Pullman riffs on the elemental chords of classical myth and fairy tale. While some sections seem rushed and the prose is not always as brightly polished as fans might expect, Pullman's exuberant work stays rigorously true to its own internal structure. Stirring and highly provocative. Ages 12-up. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Only have had it for about 1 hour but it works great!strong wire, strong grip and just the right length Only con is when I was tightening on to my bed frame I did it to tight and started to hear a slight cracking noise so don't over tightin on wide objects besides that its working great!ordering one for my wife's side

Can I mention that I love this thing? It's awesome!! I got an adjustable bed and I just wanna lay flat on my back with my feet up and not have to look either direction and I have to hold my arms up to watch my phone. So with this I can just attach it to my table and hanging over my face basically and lay there and watched TV. It's so strong I'm not even worried that it's going to drop on me or drop my phone or anything.

Great product very strong handle and very strong arm arm. Probqbly the strongest of all the phone holders that I've tested.

I play on my computer but like my PHONE where I can see it while I play. This is a LIL STIFF !! BUT its a GOOD STIFF !! Strong enough to hold phone where I need it and top swivels . I am HAPPY with this at 63 HOLDS TIGHT to TABLE not wimpy or wiggly SOLID to table to hold my phone .******LASTED SHORT TIME SORRY SWIVEL DIED . But I will REORDER

The material is very solid which is great bc it stays in one place and doesnt move but also is a little too solid meaning its tough to move easy, you have to really give it a tug. I bought one for my oldest birthday gift and will most likely order 2 or 3 more for Christmas gifts bc of how cool and convenient it is.... i love it!

Product is well made. Grips iPhone very securely, and the bendable neck stays where you leave it. I suggest when bending the neck that you hold it by just the neck, not one hand on the base or balljoint. It takes a lot of force to bend the neck...as it should, and the force may be too much for the base or balljoint.

This phone holder is stronger than I expected. I thought it would be slightly flimsy, but it is actually pretty solid. The only thing is with it being so solid, it is a little stiff to move around and get into position. But once in position, it is very reliable and you don't have to worry it or whatever it is holding slipping or falling out. I use it to watch movies while I lay in bed. I used to hold them with my hand, now I can put my hands anywhere I need them. Hehe. But it!

This Holder is great for watching long YouTube videos at my chair and in my bed. Really well made and strong. Love it

This book has some problems. The first problem is the title; it makes it sound like this is an extension of the first book. It's not. This is a book that provides tips about how to survive in various types of wilderness, natural disasters, or man made disasters (including active shooter situations), along with overly repetitive info on how to make a Go Bag.Second problem is that some off the information in here is simply wrong. I'm hoping that's the result of a bad editor/ghostwriter rather than the author being this wrong.Examples: Pg. 50, cold weather survival; yes, alcohol does cause vasodilation which leads to increased heat loss. But caffeine and tobacco cause vaso-constriction, which can contribute to frostbite. Yes, both are bad in cold weather, but stating wrong info dilutes ones trust in the res of the info provided.Pg. 94, desalinating sea water; minor but important point is missing - remove the tin can before trying to drink the water.Pg. 116, choice of shotgun ammo; this is a major problem and so wrong it could cost lives. Contrary to what's written, buckshot WILL penetrate multiple interior walls. Worse, again contrary to what's written, the pattern size from a shotgun is roughly 1" per yard of distance from the target. So at 3-6 yards that you'd see inside a home, that's a maximum of a 2" pattern, which means you DO have to aim. Did Joe Biden write this section?Elsewhere there are a couple references to saying NOT to use Goretex because it's not breathable. Well, Goretex is breathable. So the question is, did the author mean don't use Goretex BECAUSE it's breathable (and thus, unlike vapor barrier clothing, will make you colder), or did he mean you SHOULD use Goretex because it's breathable? Those are the major problems I've found so far. The rest of the book is ok I guess, but for people who've already trained in wilderness medicine, advanced first aid, or have backpacked/camped a lot, this book has less to offer.

I got this as a bit of a gag gift. I read it while winter camping and ended up finishing the entire book in long night. Emerson blends functionality, humor, and a bit of unpredictability into what ends up being a pretty good book. I like his teaching method and will be using the book as a reference to teach a nine year old basic survival skills. I will wait till the boy is a little older before we cover the chapter on how to hide a body.

This book is a continuation of his first book, 100 Deadly Skills, which I also read. Clint is a BTDT type from the SOF community as a SEAL of note, so his advice not typical mall ninja nonsense you'll often find out there. Both books supply easy to read concise advice on surviving a wide variety of possible threats and make for excellent reference guides on the topic. Sort of cliff notes for how not to die from a wide range of potential threats. The first focused on some tricks of the trade for all manner of threats and strategies more common to people who go into harms way for a living, and the second contains advice on threats more common to a larger audience and civilians, such as fires, natural disasters, home invaders, etc. I prefer the first book personally, but that's due to the fact I enjoy learning about spy craft and how high level people working in difficult and dangerous situations survive. The first more fun to read, the second more applicable to a large audience and most civilian types, although civilian types will pick up some excellent tips from the first book too.Either a worthy read, both worth reading in our modern world.

Excellent book full of great details anyone can use to prepare for the worst, should it happen. I really enjoy trying many of the skills, within reason, pointed out in the book. Practiced the navigation tips as well. I will tell you practice makes perfect. It's just fun to do.

This is an entertaining book. Offers a lot of resourceful information and some unique methods of survival. I have learned quite a bit from the book. Granted, I do not think I will use much of it, I do not think I will find myself stranded in a desert for example. But, the knowledge is great, it provides perspective, and also, you have to figure, anything is possible.

If you have family & friends who don't exactly embrace Being Prepared, then consider this the a book that is written in a way that they can consume quickly & easily. Easy to pick up, but hard to put down.

This is a fun book. I got it for my husband. It even has details for how to deal with someone coming into your house (intruder), and surviving bear or shark attacks. Also includes things like avalanches and what kind of emergency things to carry in your car. A very visual book with illustrations on every single page. Very cool pocket guide. Really quick, applicable tips.

Good basic information. Does not dive in to complex info. I would recommend this to any one learning or a quick over view for more advance survivalist. Because we some times teach others but forget to keep it simple.

Excellent book so far. I have a working single node installation now. I am reviewing the book at this point based primarily on that, as that is what I wanted first and foremost. There are many ways that are supposed to be easy paths to getting a working installation, and this book will point you toward some of those as well as walking you through simply installing it directly, which is what I ultimately did, after trying a couple of other options and finding them unsatisfactory. I currently have it running on a linux live USB (with persistence) for learning purposes. For those developers who, like myself, have never had to do development in a linux environement, the only single interruption in the hand-holding approach this gave was that I couldn't runsu - hdfsuntil I gave the hdfs account a password. Which require that I runsudo passwd hdfsand choose a password. Similarly for the yarn account you create. Anyone who knows anything about linux would already have known that. But some of us have simply never ended up doing software or data science in an environment that wasn't a microsoft windows world. On page 115 there is a missing . at the end of the linejar -cvf wordcount.jar -C wordcount_classes/which should readjar -cvf wordcount.jar -C wordcount_classes/ .I had installed oracle java insead of then the one the book used (openjdk), and consequently to get that example to compile (still on page 115) I had to usejavac -cp $(hadoop classpath) -d wordcount_classes WordCount.javainstead of the books recommendedjavac -cp 'hadoop classpath' -d wordcount_classes WordCount.java

The book is a very good introduction into the subject for a technical person. It is well-structured, clear, consistent, thorough and logical. Everything is explained with necessary depth answering nearly all questions you are likely to have while reading. Hadoop is not complex by the way - at least when learning by this guide.

This is a Practical guide along with the online companion. Lot of new informations and basics. This is the one of the best book for people who wants to learn the brand new technology (Hadoop) and its latest version. If you really want to accomplish anything by reading then buy the hard copy of the books. No Matter what book you buy. Soft copies just don't work. Believe me.

Having never installed or played around with a Hadoop environment myself, I was on the look out for an intro style book that would give me the basics and enough info to start me off. When browsing this one caught my eye as I didn’t even realise there was a Hadoop 2 and the title was pretty much spot on for what I was looking for so decided to give it a shot.Overall, I enjoyed the book and it was spot on for what I was looking for. It’s a traditional tutorial/walk through type of book on how to get a Hadoop cluster up and running and how to admin/interact with it, but it also covers enough theory that you don’t need to have any prior experience with Hadoop to follow along. However, I would say that I think it’s overpriced in the paper edition and retail price ebook so if you’re interested in this book, try and read it on Safari or get a Kindle edition to make it affordable. Other than that definitely recommended. The book starts off with a really good overview of what Hadoop is, the MapReduce pattern and the changes in Hadoop 2. Good intro material. The next chapter is a more traditional walk through on how to install Hadoop uses both the Hortonworks distribution and the Apache sources. It also covers use of Ambari for a simple web based admin console for your cluster. Nothing too detailed is explained here as it’s covered off later, but it’s a straight forward walk through so is spot on for that. The third chapter gives a really good intro to how HDFS works, covering the nodes involved, their roles and the approach taken to replication and then some basic file system commands. I particularly enjoyed this chapter as I hadn’t used HDFS before and so some of the concepts around the different nodes, compute following data, append only files and block sizes were spot on for what I needed to understand. The forth chapter covers running jobs and monitoring them in the web gui, along with some examples for base lining the performance of the cluster. The fifth and sixth chapters walks through the MapReduce approach to data analysis, using word counting in text files as the main example and then moves on to the basics of writing code to create MapReduce jobs, covering the basics in Java and Python. Simple and straightforward, but again spot on in term of depth. The seventh chapter runs through some of the other Apache tools within the Hadoop ecosystem, covering Pig, Hive, Sqoop, Flume, Oozie and HBase. These are just quick overviews but interesting as I wasn’t aware of some of these. The eight chapter is really nice in that it focuses exclusively on YARN (Yet Another Resource Negotiator), which is new to Hadoop 2 and is one of the big differences in the new version. It walks through how to use YARN for things other than the traditional MapReduce pattern, using the YARN distributed shell as an example, before touching briefly on how some of the other Apache tools can be used with YARN.The last two chapters focus on admining Hadoop through the commands required and the Ambari interface. I skimmed these as I’m only doing a very basic setup to get my head around Hadoop but would look back to these as needed. In summary, the author notes initially that this book is written to a "hello world" level in terms of depth and that’s spot on across the book. It gives you enough info to get you to a working example, and then it’s up to you. I really liked this analogy and it’s exactly the level I was looking for. I also liked the author’s style of writing so will also be going looking for more of his book to find some more advanced material on Hadoop. If you looking for an intro to Hadoop that’s a nice combination of both theory and high level tech implementation, then this is definitely worth a read. One thing I would say is that I got through the book very quickly (3 hours roughly), and was surprised to see when I checked Amazon that the paper version is just over 300 pages as it really didn’t feel like that. It reads more like a book of around 150 pages, which in my head makes sense for quick start book. Why I highlight this is that while I really enjoyed the book, as I mention earlier, I don’t think it’s worth the price of $27 that the paper version is currently retailing for. For me it’s more in the $15 - $18 bracket and so if you’re going to read this then definitely try and go for the Kindle edition which is worth it at $17.

This was a required text, but the ideas and information is invaluable to any teacher, not just art teachers. I highly recommend it if you are looking for ways to bring discussion about current and past issues into your classroom.

I purchased the book because my sons high school art teacher used his art work in this book. Thanks Mrs. Z.

An amazing curated collection of socially relevant social justice art education content and curriculum from the bee hive collective to an art educator using the Post Secret Project in her classroom to create an secret exchange project. I looked to this book in a difficult time at my own school when a student committed suicide and teachers were being silenced as to the self-harm aspect of his death. Students knew about it and knew that he had been relentlessly bullied. I was searching for answers as an art teacher to help my students without openly rebelling against administration, I found the answer in this last project and modeled it as a project to build empathy in my students as a way to prevent other students feeling like an island in the way that this boy had. In this way I was able to address the issues surrounding the suicide, the bullying, and all of the feelings of guilt the other students had about taunting him as well without openly defying admin. I was able to stand as a advocate and emotional support to my students because of the support that this book offered me when I needed creative ideas for social justice in a very disenfranchised community. <3

For a class but it interesting and thought provoking reading

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

I purchased this to fill in for copies my students had lost last year. The size of the bool lead me to believe that the print size might be a bit easier on the eye. I could not have been more wrong.Although the pages are large 6x7, the print is minuscule--about 7-point font. That's not the worst. THERE ARE NO LINE NUMBERS OR DEMARCATIONS FOR ACT OR SCENE....Just page after page of tiny font dialogue that begins on page 2, and ends on page 71.

Lately, I've been watching various televised versions of Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, and Richard III to avoid yet-another-detective murder mystery. All was well until I recently turned my attention to viewing some of Shakespeare's "comedies," most of which I have seen in the past, minus "As You Like It" which was more pastoral than comedic, and though it had the talent of of a young Helen Mirren, I found the plot was so contrived that the play struck me as stupid. I am not alone, apparently, as I found a review by Peter Beech in The Guardian entitled "Much Ado About Nothing Much" who also thinks less of Shakespeare than we thought we should. He was pioneering, yes indeed, and I am grateful for some truly shimmering lines. Nevertheless, to me, this play is seemingly pointless.

This seems to essentially be Shakespeare's response to The Jew of Malta, so if you've read that, this will seem very familiar to you. However, the language used is far more memorable, the lead character more sympathetic, and the story shaped to fit a different genre. This means that it ends on a far less tragic note, and also that it secures its place in history as one of Shakespeare's masterpieces. Essentially, it is a story of failed revenge, love, and injustice. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.

I like the way this book gives both versions of the play. It makes it easier to understand Shakespeare. Currently I am taking an English literature class and it has helped me tremendously. I read the plain English side first and then went back and read the Shakespeare version and I was able to understand it better. Some of the Shakespeare gets lost when put into plain English but it’s easy to pick up the meaning after reading both versions.

The plot involves a lot of people disguising themselves as the opposite gender but in the end everyone ends up with the one they really love. In that sense it's like a light romantic comedy but it also includes a lot of the great writing that Shakespeare is known for, including many of his most famous lines, such as the "all the world's a stage" monologue, and I hadn't realized this is the play the phrase "motley fool" came from. If you like Shakespeare, this is a must read, and it's entertaining as just a fun play. This kindle version is well formatted, though no footnotes or line numbers.

I bought this product as a material for a college course, and when we got to studying it, I quickly realized the copy worse than anything I've seen in print. Not only are there no page numbers, but EVERY SINGLE PAGE is missing multiple lines from the script. No, I'm not exaggerating. There are other issues with the presentation of the dialogues and stage directions as well, but those weren't as disruptive as the major errors with this copy. So, if you just want a cover to display to feign studying Shakespeare, go for it, but honestly you could probably find a better fake for less. If you actually want to study the play and know what happens, buy anywhere else. This is not "As [I] Like It."

Alex Jack had already shared a lot of revealing evidence in his magnificent book “Hamlet by Shakespeare and Marlowe”. This one is a kind of bible on the authorship problem. Jack’s thorough work on decoding the distinctive double semantics that mark out the whole Shakespeare’s canon leaves no trace of doubt on the name hidden beneath ‘Shakespeare’.Regardless of the anger of those who try impose the orthodoxian truth, what this book reveals is beyond question. It is only a matter of time that the world will know that Christopher Marlowe’s will, after his interpreted death, was to shake a spear against those who decided that an illiterate paesant was going to be granted with the authorship of Marlowe’s legacy.

A Secular Age, by Charles Taylor

Review

“Taylor's book is a major and highly original contribution to the debates on secularization that have been ongoing for the past century. There is no book remotely like it.”―Alasdair MacIntyre“This is Charles Taylor's breakthrough book, a book of really major importance, because he succeeds in recasting the whole debate about secularism. This is one of the most important books written in my lifetime. I am tempted to say the most important book, but that may just express the spell the book has cast over me at the moment.”―Robert N. Bellah“It is, simply, the most comprehensive account of the process and meaning of secularization… Taylor's depiction of the past two centuries is rich with insights and subtle analyses… Familiarity with Taylor's book is now the entry ticket for any serious discussion of secularization.”―Peter Steinfels, Commonweal“[A Secular Age] may become an enduring contribution to understanding religious belief, the evolution of the secular order, and the defining characteristics of modern secularism and contemporary spirituality. Like Charles Taylor's earlier books, it is a product of prodigious erudition. Its 874 dense pages brim with original observation, cogent argument constructed from sources in a wide array of disciplines, and generous ecumenical gestures, even towards humanists. His story is complex, somewhat repetitious and yet unflaggingly interesting: it is loaded with so much novel detail and insight that the reader will be grateful for each scrap of familiar ground.”―Tamas Pataki, Australian Review of Books“The focus here is neither on the role of religion in public institutions nor on the extent of religious beief, but rather on its conditions… It is the slow emergence of secularity in this sense that Taylor sets out to explain, at formidable length, and in remarkable historical and philosophical detail. Binding all that detail together is an argument that Taylor manages to sustain over nearly eight hundred pages. Simply put, A Secular Age is a magisterial refutation of what Taylor calls the 'subtraction story' of secularisation.”―Jonathan Derbyshire, Philosopher's Magazine“In a determinedly brilliant new book, Charles Taylor challenges the 'subtraction theory' of secularization which defines it as a process whereby religion simply falls away, to be replaced by science and rationality. Instead, he sees secularism as a development within Western Christianity, stemming from the increasingly anthropocentric versions of religion that arose from the Reformation. For Taylor, the modern age is not an age without religion; instead, secularization heralds 'a move from a society where belief in God is unchallenged and indeed, unproblematic, to one in which it is understood to be one option among others.' The result is a radical pluralism which, as well as offering unprecedented freedom, creates new challenges and instabilities.”―London Review of Books“Charles Taylor's remarkable book A Secular Age achieves something quite different from what other writers on secularization have accomplished. Most have focused on decline as the essence of secularism―either the removal of religion from sphere after sphere of public life, or the decrease of religious belief and practice. But Taylor focuses on what kind of religion makes sense in a secular age… Taylor is asking not only how secularism became a significant option in a civilization that not so long ago was explicitly Christian, but what that change means for the spiritual quest, both of those who are still religious and those who consider themselves secular. I doubt many people have even perceived that aspect of secularism, and Taylor's book should be as much of a revelation to them as it was to me.”―Robert N. Bellah, Commonweal“Charles Taylor's A Secular Age offers a uniquely rich historical and philosophical overview of how we came to take a disenchanted world for granted―quietly inviting us to reflect that if disenchantment and the absence of the divine were learned habits of mind, they might not necessarily be the self-evidently rational truths so many think they are.”―Rowan Williams, Times Literary Supplement“If the author had accomplished nothing more than a survey of the voluminous body of 'secularization theory,' he would have done something valuable. But, although Taylor clearly articulates his disdain for the view that modernity ineluctably led to the death of God, he goes far beyond a literature review… In addition to its conceptual value, this study is notable for its lucidity. Taylor has translated complex philosophical theories into language that any educated reader will be able to follow, yet he has not sacrificed an iota of sophistication or nuance. A magisterial book.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“In his characteristically erudite yet engaging fashion, Taylor takes up where he left off in his magnificent Sources of the Self (1989) as he brilliantly traces the emergence of secularity and the processes of secularization in the modern age… Taylor sweeps grandly and magisterially through the 18th and 19th centuries as he recreates the history of secularism and its parallel challenges to religion. He concludes that a focus on the religious has never been lost in Western culture, but that it is one among many stories striving for acceptance. Taylor's examination of the rise of unbelief in the 19th century is alone worth the price of the book and offers an essential reminder that the Victorian age, more than the Enlightenment, dominates our present view of the meanings of secularity. Taylor's inspired combination of philosophy and history sparkles in this must-read virtuoso performance.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Having read a review indicating that Charles Taylor's book originated in a series of lectures, it was easy to hear his voice in the writing. This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted (in case you really want more), and is so carefully paced that Taylor follows all of his chains of thought in constructing his arguments. It would be easy to get impatient with the detail, but take your time, follow the links, look up some of the references, and fill out a superb description of our secular age as it transformed life from enchanted to secular.I began this book reading a library copy (hardly checked out, it seems, and in pristine condition), and graduated to my own copy on my Kindle after not too many pages. As one who has often wondered about how we "lost" the enchanted world and became secular, I am so glad that Taylor also wondered, and then researched, lectured, and wrote about it.

“One could offer this one-line description of the difference between earlier times and the secular age: a secular age is one in which the eclipse of all goals beyond human flourishing becomes conceivable; or better, it falls within the range of an imaginable life for masses of people. This is the crucial link between secularity and a self-sufficing humanism.’’‘Human happiness is the only goal’ essentially identifies ‘secularism’.“Another way of getting at something like the issue raised above in terms of within/ without is to ask: does the highest, the best life involve our seeking, or acknowledging, or serving a good which is beyond, in the sense of independent of human flourishing?’’This question threads throughout this work. Holds many thoughts together.“In which case, the highest, most real, authentic or adequate human flourishing could include our aiming (also) in our range of final goals at something other than human flourishing. I say “final goals”, because even the most self-sufficing humanism has to be concerned with the condition of some non-human things instrumentally, e.g., the condition of the natural environment. The issue is whether they matter also finally.’’‘Final goals’ other than human benefits? Like what?“It’s clear that in the Judaeo-Christian religious tradition the answer to this question is affirmative. Loving, worshipping God is the ultimate end. Of course, in this tradition God is seen as willing human flourishing, but devotion to God is not seen as contingent on this. The injunction “Thy will be done” isn’t equivalent to “Let humans flourish”, even though we know that God wills human flourishing.’’Yep, ‘let your will be done’ not the same as ‘let me be happy’!Does this imply Christianity demeans human life? No . . .“The Christian case, the very point of renunciation requires that the ordinary flourishing forgone be confirmed as valid. Unless living the full span were a good, Christ’s giving of himself to death couldn’t have the meaning it does.’’Many, even Christians, overlook this obvious point.“In this it is utterly different from Socrates’ death, which the latter portrays as leaving this condition for a better one. Here we see the unbridgeable gulf between Christianity and Greek philosophy. God wills ordinary human flourishing, and a great part of what is reported in the Gospels consists in Christ making this possible for the people whose afflictions he heals. The call to renounce doesn’t negate the value of flourishing; it is rather a call to centre everything on God, even if it be at the cost of forgoing this unsubstitutable good; and the fruit of this forgoing is that it become on one level the source of flourishing to others, and on another level, a collaboration with the restoration of a fuller flourishing by God. It is a mode of healing wounds and “repairing the world” (I am here borrowing the Hebrew phrase tikkun olam).’’This slice illustrates Taylor’s style — dense, analytical, insightful. This entire extensive work continues like this, page after page. I found it easier to listen to the audible version. The reader does a marvelous job. Makes the material come alive and improves understanding. This makes sense, because this was presented as the “Gifford Lectures at Edinburgh in the spring of 1999, entitled “Living in a Secular Age?”.Detailed analysis of secular humanism . . .“Secularity is a condition in which our experience of and search for fullness occurs; and this is something we all share, believers and unbelievers alike. But also, it is not my intention to claim that exclusive humanisms offer the only alternatives to religion. Our age has seen a strong set of currents which one might call non-religious anti-humanisms, like “deconstruction” and “post-structuralism”, and which find their roots in immensely influential writings of the nineteenth century, especially those of Nietzsche. At the same time, there are attempts to reconstruct a non-exclusive humanism on a non-religious basis, which one sees in various forms of deep ecology.’’Taylor covers a lot of ground. Reader (listener) can quickly become lost, disorientated. Taylor is alert to this and provides regular summaries or outlines of the sections. This helps keep the journey clear.PART I The Work of Reform1 The Bulwarks of Belief2 The Rise of the Disciplinary Society3 The Great Disembedding4 Modern Social Imaginaries5 The Spectre of IdealismPART II The Turning Point6 Providential Deism7 The Impersonal OrderPART III The Nova Effect8 The Malaises of Modernity9 The Dark Abyss of Time10 The Expanding Universe of Unbelief11 Nineteenth-Century TrajectoriesPART IV Narratives of Secularization12 The Age of Mobilization13 The Age of Authenticity14 Religion TodayPART V Conditions of Belief15 The Immanent Frame16 Cross Pressures17 Dilemmas 118 Dilemmas 219 Unquiet Frontiers of Modernity20 ConversionsEpilogue: The Many StoriesThis is an erudite, detailed, studious work reflecting years of research.I found many of my glimpses to intellectual history clarified. I glimpsed even more new sights that added to the panorama of the past development of religious and secular thought. Not light reading (listening). Worth the effort! For example, the index shows these major references . . .Agape, Aristotle, Mathew Arnold, Calvin, Darwin, Decartes, disenchantment, Dostoevsky, Heidegger, David Hume, Christ, Kant, Marx, J. S. Mill, Nietzsche, Plato, Rousseau, etc., etc., and these are just the ones with dozens of links! The index must have thousands of links!Stupendous scholarship!Hundreds and hundreds of notes (linked)Amazing!

Many said I was brave for tackling such a book. However, the experience has been worth it. Taylor's ability to command such a wide array of content is amazing. Plus, he delivers a provocative explanation of how we have become "secular" and what it may or may not mean. If you're on the fence about reading it but have the academic chops to handle most of what is out there, then do not shy away from this tome. It is a treasure trove.

Excellent breakdown of the last several hundred years and how the shifting ideologies and philosophies led to our current secularity. A great companion book is How (Not) to Be Secular: Reading Charles Taylor, by James K. A. Smith. It can help weed out the parts of the book that might be worth your skimming depending on your area of interest.

It is not surprising that there are more than a few reviews which give less than the full five stars. I have read a few of them, and I am inclined to thing comments about its being "unreadable" are just a bit unfair. I found it relatively easy to read. Make no mistake about the subject. It is scholarly and just a bit conjectural.I came to it before I realized it was one of the famous Gifford Lectures in natural theology. This means something, as only those people with well-established credentials in a subject related to theology is offered the chance to give them. The best known Gifford Lecture series to most of us is William James' classic "The Varieties of Religious Experience" In fact, Taylor even wrote a book on James' lectures. A small one, thankfully. My first impression of Taylor's book (unlike the one by James) is that it could have been much shorter, and still made the main points. His primary thesis is that modern secularity began with the Reformation. Parts of his argument may be thin, and I am inclined to wish he would have cited some more concrete examples. When he mentions Jonathan Edwards, for example, he does not explain how citing Jonathan Edwards makes his point (not everyone knows much about Edwards beyond that one famous sermon.)What really convinced me to drop my rating from five stars to four is that this thesis is not new. It was part of Max Weber's famous thesis about capitalism and the Protestant ethic. In fact, one of the best things I got from Taylor's book is Weber's application of the word "disenchanted" to the change in world view as a result of the Reformation. Taylor gives fair credit to Weber on detailed points (mentioning Weber 12 times and his Protestant Ethic book 5 times.Where Taylor goes beyond Weber is that he is looking at the secular world from the post-Christian era, rather than Weber, who was comparing it to the way of life before the Reformation. His argument is also elaborate in its description of three types of secularity. Taylor is probably easier to read than Weber, but he makes me want to go back and see some of the finer points Weber made, since his basic idea seems to be alive and well, in spite of some heavy criticism. The notes were good, but for a scholarly book, I found them just a bit thin. I would have liked more substance in the references. You may want to check out one of Taylor's shorter books to see if you like his writing, before commiting to reading this very long work.

This book was a required text.

Great deal this book was much more expensive at many other sites -- it was like new condition and didnt have any writting in it.

This was a mandatory book needed for the Wreb local anesthesia and nitrous board exam. Lots of information.

As advertised.

Renting this book, received it in good condition and will return it in a couple months. It didn't have denotations in the margins, I'm underlining in the book, but not highlighting or denoting. That makes it harder to read.

Purchased this text book to use for a continuing education course. It was easy to read and understand. I would recommend

Suited our needs!

This book is fantastic. I have found everything what I need about anesthesia by Nitrous Oxide.MyI recimmendetions for this book.
