This brief tome is more in the nature of a pamphlet....the most informative part is at the end, describing how gypsy clans specialized in occupations, from the medieval period, i.e. tin working or fiddlers, and how this evolved (2 pages). This is very centered on Romania, and of questionable value for anyone interested in general information concerning Gypsies. It is mainly brief (2-3 page per each) conversation with inhabitants of a slum area populated by Gypsies. I gathered that many Gypsies in Romania had assimilated, and that 3 had served as Prime Minister, since Cosecu had been overthrown, so to an American, this is not very informative. Perhaps the intended reader is European. At any rate, as there is little background information provided, it is of little value to anyone not already informed.

This book is extremely short. I read it in less than a couple hours. It had many short interviews with some Roma listening to how they viewed their life. It also had a very concise history of the Roma in the back but with no sources to the information. It is a decent read for someone who just wants a very broad stroke understand of the life of gypsies in Romania. Not recommend for anyone who is doing in-depth research on the Roma.

This book was very interesting. It was nice to read a first hand account of how Gypsies live and are treated. I didn't find it depressing as it made it's point without dragging it out. The book was short but made up for it by including a brief and interesting section of history of Gypsies going back many generations.

I've always been fascinated with the history of gypsies. Their entire culture is so different from most other cultures, so I was hoping to learn more about their nomadic lifestyles. The book is very short and each gypsy interviewed, left me wondering more about their life.

Well written, but much too short. The stories are very brief and woefully lacking in detail and development. It left me wanting to know much more. As it is, it is little more than a pamphlet. Still, I found myself caring very deeply for these abused people.

Short stories that go by really smoothly. Very interesting and deep, illustrates well the daily life of the gypsies and show the less known side of the story, their version and their suffering.

Fast short read. Informative with interesting information. I would have liked this book to be longer, that said, very good for the price .

The stories were good, but too brief. The lives of the Gypsies in Romania is like an iceberg. Only the tip was touched here.

A Student Guide to Study Abroad

Review

At first I was skeptical about the value of such a volume. After all, the CARLA folks at MN have produced an evidence-based predeparture workbook, and every major college already has an entire stable of study abroad advisers. However after reading through it, I was won over. I can see that working through this book would be a very valuable process for any student who is generally contemplating study abroad but who hasn't nailed down the particulars of the program s/he is seeking. I also see it as especially valuable for the parents of a prospective study abroad student, if those parents are not quite convinced of the value of the financial and time investment. It's not the kind of book that one ought to read through at one sitting, but rather it is the kind of book that one can integrate into (or use as a rough guide for) a whole decision-making process. Congratulations on producing a fine and useful product. --Dr. Donald L. Rubin, Center for Health & Risk Communication, University of GeorgiaDrawing on real-life-stories from students and professionals, A Student Guide to Study Abroad offers the most compelling rationale why education abroad is essential for the 21st century college student. --Dr. William I. Brustein, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs, The Ohio State UniversityBeing well-prepared for the study abroad experience allows students to take full advantage of the opportunity and develop the intercultural competence necessary to succeed in today's complex interconnected global society. This resource guide is an invaluable tool that will help ensure students are ready to engage in one of the most rewarding learning experiences of their lives. --Dr. Daniel J. Paracka, Director, Education Abroad, Institute of Global Initiatives, Kennesaw State University

As CEO of Voy.gs, a website dedicated to expanding international education, we thought this book will definitely serve as a great source of information for students, parents or study abroad professionals!

Good for the rookie (whether student or professional) in the study abroad field. If you are a seasoned study abroad professional, it may be too basic.

Great resource

Wasn't as expected and returned it.

I studied abroad in Chile when I was in college and I wish I'd had this book before that trip. It's a fabulous resource for every student and their parents. It’s a practical guide that covers just about everything a student needs to know about study abroad. The authors have taken special care to include the perspectives of a diverse array of students, including a student with muscular dystrophy who studied abroad in Tanzania, a gay student who lived with a family in Buenos Aires, a black student who had amusing encounters with Chinese cab drivers (at first the driver didn’t believe she was American, but then he had “a complete moment of clarity” and said “Oooooo I know! Barack Obama daughter!!!” Her response? “Yes, sir. You are right.”)The book lists lots of different scholarship programs (like the Fulbright, Gilman and Boren scholarships) and includes anecdotes from dozens of students from a wide range of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds, who describe their experiences studying in just about every country you can imagine. The book covers the entire experience: why study abroad is so important in this globalized era, how to decide if it’s right for you, how to choose the right program, how to figure out the financials, how to prepare, how to immerse yourself in the local culture, how to stay safe and healthy, how to make the most of your time, how to transition back into life at “home,” how to highlight your study abroad experience on a resumé… and more.Reading this book reminded me of how much support I had when I studied abroad. My parents were both super-supportive, both in terms of their own histories (Dad studied in Brazil in high school, Mom studied in Germany in college) and the finances (though I think it cost about the same as normal tuition... study abroad programs can be expensive but this book illustrates that they can also be affordable, especially when you choose the right program and apply for scholarships.) A high school English teacher told us that the University of California was especially good for study abroad, with plenty of options for academic credit and financial aid. My school was incredibly supportive — I had some registration problems while I was abroad, and my advisor stood in line on my behalf to get it resolved. If I hadn’t had all that support, studying abroad would have been much harder! This book would have been an especially useful resource. The last two chapters, about what happens after study abroad, would have been most helpful to me when I was in college. I’m glad the book gives tips for dealing with re-entry, especially how to frame your study abroad experiences as you move forward and apply for jobs. The book motivated me to search for opportunities to study abroad again. A masters’ degree in Europe could be fascinating! (Shhh…)In short, this book is a must-read for every college student and their parents. It’s inspiring, practical, and vivid.

This book covers the entire study abroad experience - from the process of actually making the decision, all the way through to after you've made it back to your home country. It is such a helpful read for those who are planning on studying abroad. When I was preparing for my adventures overseas, I would have loved to have something like this; I had so many questions that I had to search out on different websites and such. If I had this book back then, I would not have had to do any of that, as everything is included inside this book. It also features many different people who completed a study abroad time, giving their input on their experiences, what they particularly loved, and what they would have done different. It's really great to get the points of view from others who have gone through what you are about to do. Since I've been back, I have been making the steps to move back abroad, as my time was so great. This book has given me different viewpoints and tips on that as well - so while it is a guide to studying abroad, it has advice for everyone who is trying to simply go abroad outside of your home country. Overall, it is a great read, with incredible insight and advice - I would definitely recommend this book!

This book offers a lot to think about for students, parents, educators and business people It makes a strong case for the value of study abroad as an integral part of a global education in the 21st century. The case is significantly enhanced by quotes and testimonials from various stakeholders. These first person narratives let the reader tap into the knowledge of a broad spectrum of trusted advisers. The range of study abroad locations and experiences offer a valuable insider's view. It was extremely helpful to read the direct perspective and advice of so many individuals without leaving my suburban couch. These straightforward thoughts feel like advice from friends -- so valuable to get when considering a potentially anxiety-filled experience. I studied in Spain and worked in Russia, and I found this book a very interesting read as my own children consider study abroad options over the next few years.

This book is exactly what I wish we had had before my oldest daughter went to Costa Rica for a semester. The book goes way beyond the academic exploration of the "going abroad experience," and includes concrete advice from the real experts--people who have learned from living abroad (including the author herself). The presentation is friendly and totally unintimidating. I didn't feel overwhelmed by dense blocks of information (which would have made me tense--if I miss a word, will it be the most important word to my daughter's success?!) Students will know what questions to ask before they even decide if the destination or experience is the right choice for them. The answers will help them set realistic expectations from the get go--so there will be fewer surprises. That will reduce anxiety for students(and their parents!) once they are actually living in another country. My second daughter will definitely us this book when planning her going abroad semester.

"Before the machine age, no one had to make the choice to be conscious of pattern, to be aesthetic." "A new building will not fill a gap if it does not come alive,..." This book explores, defines, illustrates where we've gone wrong, and occasionally where we've succeeded, since the early 1800's when it was a common skill subconsciously invoked to build with the patterns that bring a structure to life, make it beautiful, and pleasant to live in. It also provides a concise history of Architecture since 1800 that is in itself valuable to me, and it highlights the winners and losers through the last two centuries in the search to successfully build "places" instead of just sheds with decoration. Hale's defined and written about what I've been trying myself to formulate, and probably any reader of this review also is seeking. The cover says, "... (And how to get it back)" but don't expect a check list solution that works into a drawing review comment spreadsheet. You'll have to read it to see what the answer really is, sorry - you'll like the answer too!

This is a must-read fro anyone truly interested in the restoration of any 19thC building, and particularly anyone interested in not ruining their old house by installing the wrong new windows. I've bought this book for friends with old houses and they love it.

There is no other book that I know of that addresses directly the problem of the fact that much of contemporary architecture looks like *&*&%#. The book analyzes the reason for the problem and offers a coherent blueprint for how to bring back the charm of historic architecture into our modern buildings . I bought this copy as a gift for a woodworker friend as I felt he might find it useful.

It is not often that I am able to connect with other views that match my experience perfectly. "The Old Way of Seeing" explains why much architecture today leaves us cold, disheartened and abandoned.

Well described

Fantastic read. 20 years onward it's still highly relevant.

The first several pages of this book were good, and showedcomparisons of old and new buildings, and reinforced his premisethat missing regulating lines and the lack of attention to thearrangement of elements are responsible for much of thedecline in architectural quality. However, much of the rest of the book devolves into a disjointedgrabbag of architectural topics, along with comparisons of howthe human face or maple trees match the golden section with verylittle concrete in the way of design guidance or examples.I'm sure Hale is a good architect, and I would hire him in an instant,(especially after my architect put windows randomly all over our houseand didn't understand why I didn't want 4 styles of windows),but this book is poorly organized, doesn't make his point properly, and wanders far off topic.

Man's relationship to nature and the structures he builds. Worth reading on many levels.
