Amazon.com Review
"Harry was a white dog with black spots who liked everything, except getting a bath." Taking matters into his own paws, he buries his family's scrubbing brush in the backyard and runs away from home before they can wrangle him into the tub. Harry gets dirty playing in the street, dirtier at the railroad, and dirtier still playing tag with the other dogs. When sliding down the coal chute, he actually changes from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots! Of course, by the time he gets home he is completely unrecognizable to his family--even when he does all his clever flip-flopping tricks. In a stroke of doggy genius, he unearths the bath brush, begs for a bath, and the rest is history. Youngsters will completely relate to the urge to rebel, the thrill of getting dirty, and, finally, the reassurance of family. Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham's Harry the Dirty Dog, first published in 1956 and now rereleased with splashes of color added by the artist herself, is one of those picture books that children never forget. (Ages 3 to 8) --Karin Snelson

I bought this board book for my son and we love it! The board book is high quality, and the illustrations are wonderful and have a very 50's feel which is when it was written and illustrated. I love bringing this oldie back to life for my little one.The story is a lot of fun because it is all about Harry doesn't like taking baths. He runs away, going all over town and gets so dirty that his family can't recognize him. When he decides to finally go back home, the family is looking for Harry and he can't make them recognize him. He finally grabs a bath brush and gets a bath and the family discovers who he is!This is a fun one that we read as a bedtime story. It is also fun to read before bath time because you can draw connections about cleaning little ones to the story.
This is a book that will grow along with my son. Some of the story line is difficult to understand, but my son gets the basic concept. Right now, he loves to point out all of the different elements on each page: a train! a car! a boy! As he ages, the book will begin to take on more meaning. The book is about a dog who does not want to take a bath, so instead he runs out the door and finds mischief while playing around in town. He starts to get hungry and lonely and finds his way back home, but the family doesn't recognize him because he's so dirty. He used to be a white dog with black spots, but now he's a black dog with white spots. This is a classic children's book and one that I'm so glad we have in our home library. It's really a must. The size is just right and the book is quite sturdy for the adventurous toddler grip.We even found the companion DVD and I'm amazed at how the animation only enhances the story, not over powers it. It's animation style is a direct link to the book. We love it!Harry the Dirty Dog... and More Playful Puppy Stories (Scholastic Storybook Treasures)
I love this book. It is totally vintage. They had this book in my kindergarten’s library. 50 years ago! I was thrilled to find it all these years later. It’s a cute little story about a white dog that gets dirty & his owners think he’s lost. Until they give a black dog a bath and discover that he is Harry! It’s a cute book for a five year old. I give it at baby showers when they ask to give books.
This is an excellent bedtime story that is simple, straightforward, adventuresome, touching, and identifiable for families. This is an excellent story to use to teach your children to read for themselves, because after a few readings they can pick out the words for themselves, then you can "not tell the story right..." and have them show you where you are and correct you, and then read the story for themselves. This timeless classic has wonderful illustrations that compliment the text with a perfection that is often absent from modern choices. In short, this book i *valuable* because it is classic, timeless, excellent, entertaining, and pleases both parents and children alike. This is a delightful work that should be in every home.
Harry the Dirty Dog is a wonderful adventure book for reading to your child or class, and it is a great book for children to learn to read. The adventure makes them want to find out what happens to Harry. Check out the Harry by the Sea! The illustrations are very well done.
I grew up with Harry and was very excited to find these books for our youngest. Over the years we've lost my original books and had a surprise baby! Harry is interesting and fun and she loves him at 3.5 years old! Also check out "No Roses for Harry" and "Harry by the Sea."
It is bigger than the book of my childhood, and I am excited it is hardcover, because the one I read as a kid was softcover. The colors on the front are more brilliant than shows so that was cool too. I love this book. I haven't read any of the other ones, but I read this over and over with my babysitter and now I can read it to my kid! :)
I had this book as a first-grader. My children read my copy, but it has become a bit fragile. I ordered it for my little grandson. He loves it. It has everything he likes, dogs, a boy, a mama, a ball... I do not find it dated, although the illustrations are a little old-fashioned. It's a simple story about a little dog who runs away and gets very dirty. Then, his family doesn't recognize him and he has to show them he's their Harry. My grandson is 18 months and enjoys the pictures and hearing us read to him. I think a beginning reader would like it very much. I ordered the hard cover edition.
