Yes, a great poet. Yes this book does manage to include many of the high points. And yes, there are better collections that include more contemporary scholarship but this was does have its charms and by my rolled trousers, it won't harm you to have a few varied collections of the genius' work.
The words are there, but with wrong spacing, breaks, and, the line numbers on the wrong places. The subtle beauty of Eliot clouded.
In one of his essays he examines the labels we put on people collectively. In another essay he analyzes the “passion for experience†and the artistic temperament in people. The essays really make you think because they are so in depth .T. S. Eliot is a very observant critic of poetry as evidenced by his writings on the subject. He even writes about the critics of poetry itself being very well versed in all its applications ,meanings, and also to its origin. He talks of the components that make good poetry as deriving from its author. He also critiques the classic works of the Greek plays as interpreted by contemporary artists and other works of art especially in literature. T.S. Eliot discusses the origin and usage of “blank verseâ€. The reading of T.S. Elliot is an in-depth study in literature. His work gives insight into the motives , techniques, and effectiveness of famous classical authors. He speaks of ;Shakespeare, Cruikshank, Massinger, Fletcher, Middleton, Tourneur, Webster, Ford, Milton, Marlowe, Swinburne, Jonson , Kyd ,Blake, and Pound to name just a few.
A broad selection of the work of a great, Modernist experimenter, including a sampling of some of his critical essays that I had always wanted to read but hadn't before now.
If this were my Academy Awards for Modern Poetry I'd give Eliot's Four Quartets "Best Poem" with Robert Lowell, Derek Walcott and Wallace Stevens duking it out in Best Collections.
Wonderful collection. Very thorough and convenient. A great bargain as well.
I have always loved the poetry of T.S. Eliot. This book will remain in my permanent library. Highly recommend for Eliot connoisseurs.
