"THE ORGANIZED STUDENT is the best! At last a book kids and parents can really USE. If your child--or you--suffer from the slings and arrows of outrageous disorganization, buy this book! The suggestions in here really work." -- Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of DELIVERED FROM DISTRACTION "Donna Goldberg writes with the head of a professional and the heart of a mom. Her tips, tricks, and techniques are extraordinarily sensitive to the time constraints of today's families. Don't keep this book on your bookshelf. Keep it on your nightstand because you'll refer to it again and again." -- Rick Lavoie, author of It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend "Of all the how-to books I've read, this one gets first prize. It's OK. Worth buying second hand but "Smart but Scattered" by Peg Dawson is a much better choice.I read it all the way through in a brief amount of time and it gave me a few ideas but all of them plus much much more is in Smart but Scattered.

This book precisely describes the symptoms of my 14 year old son, so now he knows all the problems he has are associated with organization. No need to pay big bucks to get a psychological evaluation and diagnosis, just spend few bucks to get this book instead.(Son got several evaluations and diagnosis over the years, they were expensive and pretty much useless!)This book is just amazingly precise - "The overstuffed backpack, the missing homework, the unused planner, the test he didn't know about. Sound familiar? When the disorganized child meets the departmentalized structure of middle school, everything can fall apart. Even the academically successful child will start to falter if she misses deadlines, loses textbooks, or can't get to class on time."Very happy to discover this book!

I found this book to be extremely easy and enjoyable to read. I read it cover to cover in two days. I am now going back to implement the ideas and find that her steps are easy to follow AND easy to relate to my child. I was loaned this book by my child's school, and I have purchased my own copy so I can refer to it in the future. We are not far in yet, but I believe that this book may be life changing for my child (and maybe for me...and I thought I was organized!) Some of the other reviews said the techniques were too simple and you could find them on the internet. That maybe true. However, this book puts them in one place in a concise simple to follow plan that takes you through ALL of your child's daily structure. It IS simple enough for a child, because it is designed for a child. If it were high brow and esoteric your child would neither understand, embrace or be able to implement the system.Brilliance is often simple. Remember the quote by Robert Heinlein "Progress isn't made by early risers. It's made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something."

I especially like that that the author describes more than one way to get organized, and the methods are not complicated. I've observed that schools (& parents) tend to attack lack of organization with even more folders, binders, etc., as if adding to the quantity will somehow reduce chaos. The initial thing I was looking for was advice on a workable planner for my middle school son. The author recommends one that has 2 pages for all 7 days of the week, and lists subjects down the side, so that the student can easily see patterns in assignments as well as a weekly view. The author writes over a teacher planner, as the proper layout is impossible to find. I ended up using this model to create one of our own using a page layout program (MS Word) & getting it wirebound at an office supply store ($6).The author describes a simple yet very effective way to set up a ring binder system for keeping & filing papers & notes. However, ring binders can be awkward for some students: left-handers, those who must cope with small desks in class, or those who find binders hard to work with in general. The alternative system involves a portfolio with divided pockets to hold papers by subject; these are later filed into a binder or tote box at home. Either way, the student must "own" his system in order to make it work. There are other very valuable chapters on organizing lockers, desks at home, and filing old papers. This book is an extremely valuable resource for parents and students, and I discovered it just in time.Update, 11/8/11: My now high school senior son has been using his planner & filing system every year with great success. He gets a new planner every semester for class changes & to make it a bit thinner. Even though he now takes a laptop to school for note taking & monthly calendar, the paper planner is still invaluable for schoolwork. It is faster to access, never runs out of power, & will never crash. I expect he will take a version of his planner to college. This book is something every parent needs for helping children develop & maintain workable organization skills.

I got this for a friend who's daughter just started High School and it helped more than anyone can imagine. Life is more fast paced than ever before and kids in school feel the pressure as well. This book has more solutions than a room full of parents. It is completely accurate and has helped this freshman learn how to be better organized in our high paced, complex high schools that seem to reflect the chaotic world we all live in. I give this book a 10+++++ rating and it is a must for every parent who wants to start helping their kids get organized well before college. I wish this book was around before I went to college 20 years ago. I am sending this book to my sister-in-law for my nephew who is 10 yrs old. Its never to late to start, in fact its a great book for adults as well..you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I am a teacher working with executive function issues. I really like the ideas and already use a lot of them. I am always on the look out for books for my parent library and thought this might help and will include it in the library, however, it is a bit wordy and difficult to focus on.

I gave this book to my rising sixth grader to read. He was very interested! He made a list of strategies and tools based on what he thought would help him succeed in middle school. He has never made a planning list like that before! We bought hanging files and his own hole punch and set up a study area just for him. The only drawback is that he thought it was better for high school students, because in middle school, the school and teachers still require their own preferred strategies, such as an agenda or certain types of notebooks, instead of the student being able to use what he prefers.

I was engulfed in this book writhing the first 10 pages.I admire Megans' strength and courage in telling her story and bringing awareness to many that young girls (and boys) are at risk to be taken advantage of in unthinkable ways. The only thing I didn't like was I had to wait for book 2 then book 3 to download to continue reading. I would have paid to buy 2&3 together if that were an option.

After reading the first part of this series I couldn't stop thinking about it and had to get the next installment. This heartbreaking account of this young girl's life is beyond horrific. The human trafficking for the sex slave industry has far reaching consequences. The author describes how quickly she became the shell of who she once was. A page turner for sure, you'll feel as if you'd love to just reach through the pages and rescue this child.

It was traffic .To have spent 6years in a living he'll is unimaginable .Thank God she got out of there and hope she can live a normal life again.

Very sad story and this part 2 picked up right where part 1 left off. This story is hard to read but well worth pushing though. This brave lady not only got through this very bad time in her life but is now wanting others to beware of the dangers that are out there

SadAnd horrible life she lived. So going to experiences such hellish things. Good thing eventual y she snapped put of that mentality to have the courage to change her life for her health and sanity.

Sad that this happens, but well written

Very Awesome read, keep attention and hard to put down! Thanks for sharing your story

I enjoyed the 2 books I read buy I didn't get the 3rd I would have preferred all of them in 1 book instead of short books.

Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians: Contact Your Invisible Helpers, by Richard Webster

Review

For as long as humans have had writing, and probably long before that people have shared tales of non-material beings, both spirits of this world and angels from the spiritual realms. Now, the truth is, you can find a little bit about one or the other in a wide variety of books. But these days I'm into the idea of making things easier. So now there's no reason to go looking through numerous books when you can find all of the information you need in Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians by Richard Webster. If you have ever puzzled about the meanings of these terms, this book is for you. You will find the history of spirits and angels and how they are different. You'll also learn how one angel is different from another and that there are different types of spirit guides. And of course, you'll learn how to contact them. Did you know that your attitudes and emotions can impede your communication with spirits and angels? It's true. And in this book you'll learn ways of improving your self-image and confidence while overcoming negative emotions such as greed and anger. Not only will you be better as a result, but you will be able to contact the non-physical entities more easily. The book reveals the secrets of becoming a medium to contact spirits. You'll also learn how to work with another person and with a group. You'll even learn how to communicate with spirits through table tipping, an easy skill to learn and one which will surprise and shock people who are watching as well as those who are participating. I just can't recommend this book more highly. It simply is the best starting point for learning about, and how to communicate and work with, spirits and angels. If you are interested in this subject, or want to find out what others are doing, this is the book you need.

Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians: Contact Your Invisible Helpers by Richard Webster is a thought-provoking book. I especially liked part one, which is about angels. Webster is very knowledgeable on the topic. The author teaches you how to contact your guardian angel and arch angels. I found the information to be extremely useful. The second part on spirit guides had a lot of information on séances and contacting spirits. He also had some good information on contacting spirit guides. Although I was primarily interested in learning about angels, I also found the second half of the book on contacting spirit guides interesting.

Even though I have rejected religion and all other forms of mysticism I still find it interesting that so many people are believers in spite of a lack of compelling scientific evidence in these esoteric subjects. I had never read a book that focused on angles and spirit guides so when I saw this soft cover book (Spirit Guides and Angel Guardians by Richard Webster 342 pages) on Amazon for a bargain price I purchased it.I did find this book to be an interesting read. The author clearly ignores those who might question the existence of these invisible helpers and writes as if angels and spirit guides are not figments of our imagination but real beings sent to help us. The volume is organized into two parts. The first part covers angels, your guardian angel, creating your guardian angel, working with the Archangels, ministries of healing, Angel, creativity and the arts, your angel diary, and other information about angels. The second part explains all about your spirit guides and covers ways to contact your spirit guides, spirit guides and emotional health, your limitless guides, psychic circle and other topics. If you are a true believer in religious dogma, mysticism and other esoteric subjects you will find this book very interesting and even helpful. I admit it is very appealing to think we all have personal angels and guardians who will help us with all our problems; however, as a scientific minded person I remain with my feet firmly planted in reality.Rating: 4 stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Myths and misconceptions about the martial arts and self-defense)

I already bought this book for myself and one day when my granddaughter was visiting she started asking me questions about Angels. I gave her this book to read & she was quite interested in it so I purchased another one for her for Christmas. It arrived in great shape, very happy with my purchase. Thank you.

It is written in a way everyone can understand.

Enjoyed this book very much. Had a hard time in putting it down. A whole lot of information you can use.

Richard Webster is an excellent writer and this book demonstrates that. His exercises and techniques are easy to understand and apply. I highly recommend it.

Excellent read. Well packaged and delivered on time. Thanks

I love when a book teaches me something I hadn't heard before. There were a few extra nuggets that this very seasoned reader picked up from this book. A nice enjoyable read.

Amazon.com Review

Did Nicolas Copernicus steal his notion that the earth orbited the sun from an Islamic astronomer who lived three centuries earlier? "The jury is still out," writes Dick Teresi, whose intriguing survey of the non-Western roots of modern science offers several worthy arguments that Copernicus in fact ripped off Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. Common belief is that Westerners have been the mainspring of most scientific and technical achievement, but in Lost Discoveries Teresi shows that other cultures had arrived at much of the same knowledge at earlier dates. The Babylonians were using the Pythagorean theorem at least 15 centuries before Pythagoras drew his first triangle, and in A.D. 200 a Chinese mathematician calculated an incredibly accurate value for pi. The Mayans and other Mesoamericans were outstanding sky watchers and stargazers. The greatest advances occurred in math and astronomy, though Teresi also devotes chapters to physics, geology, chemistry, technology, and even cosmology. Sometimes he is a bit overeager to ascribe great thoughts to long-dead people (he casually suggests that "many ancient cultures had inklings of quantum theory"), but on the whole his book is a reliable and fascinating guide to the unexplored field of multicultural science. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly

Science journalist Teresi (coauthor of The God Particle) has combed the literature to catalogue the scientific advances made by early non-Western societies and to determine their impact on Western science. His work spans millennia and encompasses the full extent of the globe. He points out, for example, that five millennia ago the Sumerians concluded that the earth was round. He also provides information on cultures of the Middle East, India, China, Africa and Oceania, as well as a host of New World cultures, predominately those of Mesoamerica. Throughout, readers learn that scientific knowledge of various sorts in diverse forms has been a part of all cultures. In chapters on mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, chemistry and technology, Teresi makes a convincing argument that Western science has often been indebted to advances made elsewhere (mineralogy was studied in Africa as early as 5000 B.C.). Teresi is at his strongest in the section on mathematics, where he discusses the evolution of Arabic numerals from the ancient Indians and the earliest conceptualizations of zero and infinity. Much less compelling are his assertions that early societies foreshadowed the ideas of quantum mechanics. Although a bit uneven, Teresi offers a great deal of fascinating material largely ignored by many histories of science.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

One of the best books I read - dethrones scientific emphasis on 'the West as the Best'. Easy to read and intellectually stimulating.

The author of "Lost Discoveries" claims he began to write "with the purpose of showing that the pursuit of evidence of nonwhite science is a fruitless endeavor," but his goal changed when he kept finding "examples of ancient and medieval non-Western science that equaled and often surpassed ancient Greek learning." The book he wrote instead is a compendium of miscellaneous ancient, non-Western discoveries or beliefs in what he calls the "hard sciences." (An unfortunate lapse: By "nonwhite," Teresi apparently means non-European; his investigation includes other Caucasian civilizations.)Non-Western scientific background is definitely a topic worthy of a book for the general reader, and, although there's some fascinating stuff here (and a solid bibliography that will expand anyone's reading list), "Lost Discoveries" suffers from several shortcomings. One problem is the book's organization. Teresi divides his discussion into distinctions that were unknown a few centuries ago--mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, chemistry, and technology--and then divides each of these chapters by localities. As a result, the book has little narrative flow and makes for some awfully dry reading--the type of disconnected paragraphs one usually finds in textbooks or reference works. I found it difficult to read this book for more than a few pages at a stretch.Furthermore, since modern scientific specialties were, of course, unknown to ancient investigators, his categorization results in some odd choices. For example, beliefs concerning the shape of the earth (round, flat, or square) are discussed in geology as well as cosmology. Similarly, he arbitrarily divides up the work of alchemists among several chapters. Since ancient and medieval studies span many disciplines, there is a lot of annoying (and often verbatim) repetition: we read about the yin-yang duality and ch'i in the sections on astronomy, physics, geology, and chemistry; about Jainism with regards to cosmology, physics, and chemistry; and how Avicenna influenced physics, geology, and chemistry.Teresi was cofounder of Omni Magazine, which had a reputation (some might call it notoriety) for including articles on topics that strayed well beyond science and into paranormal exploration and New Age quackery. Although "Lost Discoveries" is usually on firmer scientific ground, the author occasionally recalls his earlier career with an eager enthusiasm to find direct or symbolic connections between ancient learning and modern scientific investigation. This is particularly true in his chapter on cosmology. (Teresi's obvious distaste for Big Bang theory doesn't help here.) The Mangaian creation myth, describing an infant universe emerging from a coconut root, may offer interesting literary and cultural insights, but it in no way "anticipates" modern cosmological theories of an inflationary universe. Elsewhere, it's simply preposterous to find intimations of quantum theory in the ancient Indian "yadrccha" (chance) or of the Higgs field in the Buddhist "maya" (the weight of the universe). One may as well argue that William Bennett is a quantum physicist every time he walks into a casino. It's too bad that Teresi didn't organize his research by civilization and time period, compare these societies on their own terms (rather than ours), chart their influences on each other and on subsequent cultures, and avoid misguided attempts to find inklings of 21st-century theories and knowledge in every ancient myth. Readers looking for a stronger investigation of the wonders of non-Western science, technology, and civilization should check out Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" or Felipe Fernandez-Armesto's "Civilizations."

I like that he sets out to prove Europeans-Mediterranean-West Asian superiority and then has the flexibility to see his mistake and ultimately spend the whole book criticizing the West. Very admirable. There is also a lot of interesting material here.On the other hand the writing is poor. In each chapter there’s at least one, if not several, long sentences that I had to reread 8-10 times and still I often moved on without comprehending. Things like verb agreement, comma usage, subject-predicate structure were lost in a complicated series of parenthetical phrases and asides in more than one instance. Very distracticing. Basically, he writes like a low grade journalist. There are also many factual or conceptual errors. These may have origins in the works he’s citing, but he repeats them without question. Examples: he confuses Sungbo’s Erido and the Walls of Benin as being the same structure. They’re different things. He states that z spin is stronger than s spin in textiles. Completely untrue, as they’re identical in structure, just mirrored in direction. He doesn’t understand plying or spinning at all. He also makes a whole paragraph point about limestone that is completely unintelligible and simply demonstrates his complete lack of geological understanding. These examples are just the ones I remember freshly from the final chapter that I’ve tecently read. There are undoubtedly many more errors that I’m not well versed in and can’t judge. But the ones I can see lead me to believe that there must be more that I’m just not smart enough to catch. Very troubling for non-fiction.I’d say go ahead and read it to see how poorly westerners did up until the 18th century ad, it’s worth the writing style to hear the message, but don’t take all the factoids at face value. Some are bogus.

This book presents myth-shattering evidence about the non-western roots of science and mathematics. The part about mathematical contributions of non-Western science seems to be well-researched and lies on solid ground. Past that, however, the book flounders as it confuses religion and philosophy with science. To lay claim that the Buddhist concept of emptiness has something to do with the void at the heart of the modern concept of atoms is more than a little bit of a stretch. The ancients may have accidentally hit upon the right concept, but so did they have thousands of other philosophical concepts that don't mesh well with modern science, and nowhere did they possess the mathematical and experimental proof to backup their claims. This is the main difference we make today between science and religion: that which can be proven versus that which cannot. It is a pity the author decided to take this turn, when the ancients had much that can be classified as solid, true science. The ancient Arabs, for example, contributed much in terms of optics, dynamics, meterology, and geographical projection. They were able to explain the formation of rain, explain motion, and draw accurate maps. So did many other cultures have solid contributions. Why focus on comparing the various Indian philosophic beliefs to string theory when the latter has less than a few dacades history and may be proven wrong? Isn't it more fair to compare those non-Western cultures to their European contemporaries, as the author briefly does in the introduction? It is another pity that the author refuses to include medicine in the scope of the book, since that is where much of non-Western contributions to science lie. Despite these shortcomings, this book is an exciting and gripping read.

José Martí was a Cuban revolutionary and fighter for independence who was also known worldwide as a poet and a journalist. Referred to by many as the “Apostle of the Cuban Revolution,” Marti was born in Havana in the middle of the 19th century. I was referred to Marti' through other literary sources. What I found far surpassed my expectations. Whether it is his writing style, his first hand accounts of important moments in US and Cuban history as a reporter or the insight into US and Cuban relations and the inevitable attempts at a Cuban revolution that followed, this is important reading to any serious or even curious student of Cuba, US History or Latin American literature and literary figures. The writings evolve over a lifetime and combine the life experiences of Jose Marti with the evolution of US social and political upheaval during this period, the growing discontent of Spanish rule over Cuba and reveal much about the US and Cuba through the eyes of an activist observer who ultimately became part of the story. His final writings and accounts of the War and his role in an ill fated revolution are some of the most intimate and foreboding accounts of a person's life mission that I can recall ever having read and seem to be a turning point in modern Latin American writing and literature. The final document of the poet warrior's chronical of his and his country's pending demise.

Marti was a prodigy, a genius, yet he is little known in the U.S. either for his prose or poetry. Those who have heard of him may associate him with Radio Marti or know him as a Cuban revolutionary. While this beautifully rendered translation includes a broad spectrum of Marti's works, some not previously translated, his descriptions of America in the latter half ot the nineteenth century are by themselves sufficient reason to buy this book.Marti, coming from a different culture, sees things about America that we do not, and he describes them with a passion lacking in the reportage of his North American contemporaries.

I found this text very approachable and with a good mix of Marti's writings both thematically and in terms of his progression as a poet and a political thinker. You can not understand contemporary Cuba, especially Cuban nationalism without reading Marti. This reader is a great start.

An important collection of letters by one of the foremost freedom fighters in Latin America

Good,enough information to begin search.

Jose Marti's writings were really my first entry into Latin American political thought. I was greatly impressed by his writing style and his ability to project how the Western hemisphere's development would unfold over the 20th Century. This is an important book for understanding the region, and also modern today Cuba and Venezuela.

The Cuban character, as it turns out, is not so much a development of the post-Castro trauma in which so many Cuban-Americans live but rather the expression of a deep and inescapable sense of exile. In this gorgeous, captivating translation of Marti's writings--some appearing in English for the first time--this 19th century journalist and poet is truly the epic voice of the Cuban people, articulating their pathos and homesickness in his dispatches from New York, putting his finger into the wounds of their suffered humanity in his poetry and travelogues. An elegant, profound picture of the Cuban soul, long before the Ilan Gonzalez events cast such an unfriendly light upon it.

Marti, also known to decent Cubans as "The Apostle," became one of Latin America's icons of classic literature, war patriot, compassionate human being, poet, brilliant writer and journalist; A man of the times, he is venerated today by every thoughtful Cubano who embraces freedom, democracy, and human dignity.I wish I knew what his reaction would be if he sees our beloved country being raped, physically and morally destroyed, and its flag desecrated by a band of atrocious murderers, megalomaniacs and hatemongers. Most certainly he'll experience anger, shame, or a wind that blows out the lamp of his powerful mind.Andrew J. RodriguezAward-winning author: "Adios, Havana," a Memoir.

Review

Starred Review- School Library Journal*Gr 1-3-The Noodlehead brothers, Mac and Mac, are back in this irresistibly funny graphic novel about misunderstandings and mistakes. The empty-headed boys go fishing after their mother pushes them out of the house on a beautiful day. Wordplay abounds, such as when the boys both literally and figuratively miss the boat. Arnold's exaggerated artwork complements the hilarious text. Side characters serve either to trick Mac and Mac or attempt to help them figure out life. The series reads like an updated (and, well, smarter) version of Harry Allard's The Stupids. The authors' notes at the end provide historical context for the adventures. Arnold, Hamilton, and Weiss borrow from many international sources of classic fools' stories, and the citations are a nice touch. Kids will feel like they have the upper hand while also reveling in Mac and Mac's foibles, and they might even learn a thing or two about logical reasoning. Even Mac and Mac learn something by the end, but when it comes down to it, they're still the same old Noodleheads. VERDICT A must-buy for graphic novel collections.-Gretchen Hardin, Sterling Municipal Library, Baytown, TX"Readers will come away with plenty of laughs. The introduction and three short chapters are filled with brightly colored comics panels in Arnold's signature art style. Fans won't want to miss the boat on this one."(Kirkus Reviews)Awarded a Junior Library Guild selection for 2018

My 8 year old thinks this series is the most hilarious!

Mac and Mac decide to learn how to fish. How hard can it be?The silly noodle brothers manage to survive their fishing adventure and sure sound like they did things right, but oh boy did they have some epic mistakes. Kids should find this graphic novel and the silly noodles hilarious. I am continually amazed by the wealth of literary history and information that they pack into the back of these books. The authors share folklore inspiration for the three parts of the story, and also explain where various expressions that are used as word play in the book came from. Recommended for folklore studiers, those learning about English word play and idioms, and of course, silly graphic novel fans.

I bought the first Noodlehead for my cousin’s son (who loved Fly Guy) and this most recent one, Noodleheads Find Something Fishy, for my niece. Each title in the series is perfect for the early reader or for any child who has a penchant for the absurd and silly. Philip Pullman recently wrote that “to keep old stories alive, we must find ways to retell them in new ways.” Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss have done just that in the Noodlehead series and Arnold has drawn the perfect noodles. And, for the adults among us, you might be surprised to learn in the helpful “Notes” section not only the source of the stories but the origins of some common phrase. I certainly “learned the ropes!”

The latest installment in the Noodlehead series is a real hoot! My daughter loved the engaging illustrations, and could even grasp much of the humor, despite only being a toddler. And the word play was fun for us as adults. What a fun read!

There’s nothing better than a couple of noodleheads! This is a fantastic book and part of an incredible series! Our nieces and nephews all love the whole series. They’ve grown up with them and we can’t wait for more to come out. Perfect for 5 to 9-year-olds.
