Neil DeGrasse Tyson's new collection of essays written between 1995 through 2005 for NATURE magazine proposes questions and answers that those without a degree in astrophysics can understand.Tyson doesn't rest on his laurels either. These essays have been updated where appropriate to reflect new theories, changes, etc. The last section on science and Hollywood is particularly interesting (and funny). Tyson sat with James Cameron and noted to the "Titanic" director that the stars in the film were all wrong yet he got so many other facts right. He asked him simply why he couldn't also get the stars right as well. Cameron's reply, "Imagine how much more money I would have made if I had gotten the stars right!" silenced Tyson. Later, though, he got a request for the correct alignment of the stars for the special edition of "Titanic" released a couple of years back. Tyson happily complied with his request.Tyson also tackles subjects as diverse as asteroids, to the five points of Lagrange (areas where gravity and centrifugal forces rotating systems balance. He uses an imaginative and funny analogy involving a thrill ride and vomit to make his points. He also tells us what the color of the cosmos really means. Insightful and often fun to read Tyson's book of essays look into a world that is often beyond the imagination of the average person but reminds us all why we should try and imagine it and appreciate it.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is also known as the “black science guy” on various internet forums, such as reddit. Dr. Tyson’s also got some popular internet memes styled after him such as the “we got a bad ass over here” meme. However, in real life he is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and is an extremely accomplished astrophysicist. In a lot of ways, he is the Carl Sagan of our generation. If you have seen the TV show Cosmos on either PBS or Fox, he is the new host for this revamped show which used to be hosted by Carl Sagan. He is very well known for his ability to take scientific concepts and distill them into something that we can understand. I’m no scientist, so I need someone who understands these concepts to explain them in a way that we can relate to.This book is a selection of small essays that he’s written for various newspapers, magazines, and internet blogs. Death by Black Hole touches on a lot of amazing scientific concepts that are almost taken by granted by a lot of people today, but it provides a foundation for everything that we do in space or dealing with the cosmos. Dr. Tyson is excellent at taking these concepts and putting them in situations that we can understand as non-scientists complete with humor. A wonderful example of this is in the essay “Going Ballistic," where he states what happens to a person who jumps through a hole dug through the center of the earth. The old “what happens when you dig all the way to China” quandary. He says, "Now comes the fun part. Jump in. You now fall continuously in a weightless, free-fall state until you reach the earth’s center, where you vaporize in the heat of the iron core.” He then goes on to ignore that complication and then talk about gravity and what happens as you move closer to and then farther from a center of mass.Dr. Tyson is one of the best scientific minds of our generation, and his major contribution to science is his ability to connect with the layman, which is you and me, and help them understand why science is so important to today’s society. So if you want a few laughs, and if you want to learn about astrophysics, astronomy, “regular” physics, and all the other amazing things that happen in our cosmos, I would recommend reading Death by Black Hole.

This book is AWESOME. Tyson does a great job of explaining complex processes, objects, and ideas while keeping a light tone with just the right amount of humor and sarcasm.

Super cool and a good variety of concepts.

Lively writing as always by Tyson. My only complaint, and the only reason this isn't 5 stars, is that since this is a collection of essays, he reintroduces concepts multiple times. We learn what the Principia is many times. Probably not so bad if you're reading, since you can just skip ahead but if you're listening to it (as I was) during a commute you start to become annoyed the 5th or 6th time you learn that the Principia is Newton's explanation of his three laws of motion or the 8th time you learn about Galileo.Another complaint about the Audio book is that it isn't read by Professor Tyson, strange since he's got a marvelous speaking voice and had his own show.These complaints are minor though. The book is a merry journey through the wonders and terrors of our universe, suitable for all ages.

I liked it a lot. The way it is written like you are chatting with the renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is very appealing. He uses a language and vocabulary accessible to most of the people who graduated highschool. Also the examples he gives are simple and easy to understand.I would like to see a revised version of this book, one that includes the discoveries from the latest years.

An interesting look through the window to the world of physics, in the fantastical way only Neil deGrasse Tyson could. This book is almost a Cosmos in book form, it's a journey through well known and lesser so ares of physics and astronomy. It's not an un-putdownable one but I think that's the nature of books of this kind, it is interesting and fun, I would say read this if you enjoy Tysons TV work as it's in a similar style to that, less of a technical book and more for us laymen.

My only quibble (and it's a small one) with this book is that some of the words I don't understand are not included in the vocabulary lists at the end of the chapter, while quite a few of the words I already know (some of them cognates which are easy to figure out) are. Well, Kindle readers have an advantage here, with their built-in dictionaries. You can go to the Manage Your Content and Devices page and add the Italian-English dictionary to your home page, and when you don't know a word, leave your finger on the word for a moment to bring up the dictionary and choose the Italian dictionary and you will have the definition. After you select the dictionary the first time, the Kindle remembers the association between that book and that dictionary, so you don't have to select the dictionary each time.I studied Italian for six months before I went on a vacation to Italy. I completed the DuoLingo course online and also the Mango course available online at your library (probably). I also studied a few lessons on the Babbel website (I didn't like their approach as well as DuoLingo's). These stories are just right for me! A chance to review what I've learned, and keep it in my memory, while at the same time effortlessly learning tenses and syntax and lots more vocabulary. The stories--mostly adventure stories--won't win any prizes, but they are pleasant and engaging and I really enjoyed reading them. I like to read them out loud to practice my pronunciation.

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in coming to grips with Italian in a fun, motivating way. What it does really well is to:+ keep the vocabulary and grammar level both comprehensible and challenging for an advanced-beginner or intermediate learner of Italian;+ provide opportunities to encounter vocabulary items more than once and in different contexts, which greatly increases the chance of actually learning them;+ use vocabulary that is actually relevant and useful for someone learning Italian and who wants to be able to use that vocabulary in various social contexts.In my experience, what's really interesting about this book is that you will probably not even realize how much Italian you have acquired through reading it until you go back to read it again or take up another book in Italian and can actually understand a lot more than you would have expected.

I started reading in Italian with the first Harry Potter. It was a bit over my head. This collection of short stories, however, is at exactly the right level for me. I especially appreciated the author's instruction on how to read in a foreign language: now, even Harry Potter is within reach. There are great tools included at the end of every chapter to review what you just read and add to your vocabulary in a fast AND natural manner.The stories themselves were interesting enough to keep me reading. In fact, since they're short stories, I mostly found myself wishing they went on longer!This book and the instruction that comes along with it gave me a huge confidence boost regarding my Italian language skills and actually helped them immensely. I can't recommend this (and the others in other languages by the same author) strongly enough.

Some of the stories are better than others, but there's a good variety. I've been using Rosetta Stone to learn Italian. It does cover the major verb tenses, but I found this book particularly helpful because there's a lot of past tense. There were enough words I didn't know to be challenging, but it was definitely geared for a reader at my level. The little quizzes and summaries at the end are also helpful.

This book is perfect for those who have a modest beginner's knowledge of Italian. Vocabulary and grammar are taught in context, making memorization easy. While the book is designed for beginners, Richards does not shy away from serious grammar. In the first two chapters of the first story, the reader is exposed to the subjunctive of "essere", the present perfect tense, and a good deal of grammar which gives the reader a thorough but manageable workout. Highly recommended for advanced beginners and early intermediate students.

I have been studying Italian on my phone with an app and have taken a couple Italian courses some years back. I don't have access to people speaking the language all the time so I was thrilled to find a beginners book for adults! This book is EXACTLY what I was looking for. It gives excellent tips in the beginning of the book that are beneficial and includes vocabulary lists and comprehension questions after each short story. I especially like the short stories for two reasons: 1) I get the satisfaction of completing an entire story that isn't the length of an entire book and 2) The stories are intentionally varied so you are more likely to find some you really enjoy.I am half way through and I highly recommend this book. It is so satisfying to sit down and read in the new language I have been studying! If I could make one suggestion it might be to include an index of the new vocabulary words or perhaps a glossary so when I forget one that I KNOW was in one of the stories, I don't have to try and search through the book.

I LOVE this little book! I speak only a little Italian and this is actually a great tool to learn conversational Italian; you can indeed understand the main plot of what's happening even if you are not fluent. I've had to re-read the stories to better understand but this is mostly for learning. The stories and fun with good humor and they have good little plots for a book of this type. It's definitely worth the money; I have it on Kindle (on my Android) which seems to be a fine format.

About the Author

J. D. McClatchy is the author of seven previous collections of poetry and of three collections of prose. He has also edited numerous books, including The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry, and has written a number of opera libretti that have been performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, and elsewhere. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, where he served as president from 2009 to 2012. McClatchy teaches at Yale University and is editor of The Yale Review.

I have loved reading and writing poetry most of my life. I prefer reading the older poetry masters in most cases rather than most of the contemporary poets, but I did like many of the poets in this collection. When I saw this huge 617 page volume (The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry Second Edition by J.D. McClatchy) of poetry for a bargain price on Amazon I immediately purchased it. Even though the copy I got was marked up a lot by previous readers; nevertheless, it did not take away from the enjoyment of reading this book.This volume has so many poems from some of the greatest poets that this review cannot do it justice. Even though I have always preferred short (One page or less) poem forms over the long drawn out and sometimes boring poems; nevertheless, this collection has something for every poetry lover. Some of the many poets who have contributions in this volume include the following: Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, John Berryman, Randall Jarrell, Robert Penn Warren, J. V. Cunningham, Robert Hayden, May Swenson, Mona Van Duyn, Howard Moss, James Dickey, Denise Levertov, Allen Ginsberg, John Ashbery, John Wright, Ann Sexton, Mary Oliver, Jay Wright, Henri Cole and many, many other poets.One of the many things I like about this book is the way they introduce each poet showing their date of birth (and death of the poet) and a short bio about each poet. I admit I enjoyed reading most of the poems in this collection, but as I mentioned previously I am not a fan of the long free verse poems.If you are a poem lover this is a book you should check out.Rating: 5 Stars. I liked the variety of poets, the brief description of each poet and the many poets and poems involved. It was clear and concise, easy to read. Since I am just taking my first course on poetry I enjoyed the information included and it gave lots of interesting information about each poet and very interesting poems.

I purchased this book for a poetry class, but I take great pleasure still in opening to a random page and finding something new. This is a dense, thorough anthology, good for revisiting known pieces and discovering poets to look into further. Great introduction to someone interested in learning more about poetry, but is substantial enough that it isn't a kiddy introduction.

But I don't understand why some poets aren't represented as extensively as others. Rita Dove has a great body of work but there are only three of her poems in here, they aren't lengthy either. Gjertrud Schnackenburg is another example. Most of the poets that got slighted are at the back of the book. Perhaps the editor ran out of room.With that said this anthology was a step up from my previous poetry reading endeavors. There is great variety in this book ranging from very "accessible" classics like Roethke's "The Waking" and Wright's "A Blessing", and much longer and more difficult (for me) poems like Merrills "Lost in Translation". The introductory mini-biographies are cool and the general introduction is interesting. I also like the clever cover art. Nothing says America like a blank billboard.To a poetry neophyte like myself this book is a challenge, but not overwhelming. I look forward to buying the complete works of many of the poets I discovered in it.As to certain omissions, it seems like this anthology was geared toward the academic highbrow crowd. Hence no Bukowski, Wendell Berry, Stephen Dobyns, Thomas Lux or Raymond Carver....oh the list could go on. There is nothing wrong with these voices, they are distinctly American though and at least one "rough" voice would have been cool.On a final note why is there no William Carlos Williams in here? Maybe he missed the cutoff date and was a little too old. Oh well.

I learned quite a bit about poetry through this anthology. Once I graduate, this is one book that I would love to go through and read the parts that we're covered in class.

I needed to buy this book for a class and was delighted to see work from recognized poets not found in larger anthologies. The book is a good size to be portable without sacrificing content.

In this wistful yet beautifully poignant collection of western poetry, I read "Early Spring Ride," the fourth poem , during a late March blizzard--under a quilt my grandma made. I had a hot cup of black coffee, and it was the perfect time and place, a rare juxtaposition of real life lived and the printed page where Nesbitt resides, sock footed, with cars parked, eating left-over chicken alone, and listening to Gene Autry.When the snow is done, should we visit the Bronco Bar, or pay a visit to the dark house and its dark memories?The entries here cover a number of years but are threaded together with a graceful hand familiar with loneliness but skilled at finding sufficiency. Nesbitt's poems are not restrained but rather, deftly contained, declarative of a basic ability to live in a world where she is gone, where she is here, where love doesn't call for trade-offs, where love's not measured like the dirt...You see, I could riff on Nesbitt's words for a long time. If you're keen on any poetry at all, you will too. If you're not, this is the perfect introduction. You'll find memory, hope and celebratory songs. I especially like "Blue Horse Mesa," a blood-churning duet, "Boss of the Bottomline Ranch" (He walks like a duck with a backache...), and the title piece, "Thorns on the Rose."If you've ever seen the warm red beacon of Officer Miller in your rear view mirror...If you've never killed a man by light of day, (but done so under cover of night)...If you won't live in LA (but even if you do)...This is the stuff. My five year old hates writing, but loves doing a maze. Mazes and Connect the Dots are the only thing that I get him to sit down for more than 5 minutes. However, he sails through them in a breeze. While I like the Kumon books, at 8-12 dollars a pop, my son is done in a weekend. So, Dover has a bunch of these little maze books for 1-3 dollars. Granted the mazes are shorter and the book is a lot smaller (the size of a cell phone), these are tiny, but mighty. Easy to put in a backpack, purse, or pocket this will keep your little one entertained while not breaking the bank.

Content good but book is only about 4" X 6" which I overlooked if in the printed descriptor. Mazes obviously for children and little hands which need bigger book to manage. Small books like this are hard for kids to manipulate and keep open to do the content.

Our 5 year old granddaughter is working on mazes in Pre-K ( her birthday is 11/15th and by law she had to be 5 by 9/1st) but she is working on kindergarten level. She has sight words and she is beginning to read (in January '14 she will be tested and possibly move into kindergarten. This tiny book is perfect for her and she just loves it. To preservers it copies have been made and she works on them while riding in the car. It is small enough to fit in the glove compartment/purse ( it can make long waiting time bearable. :-)

My 4-year old grandson loves the mazes. I just wish the book was a little larger.

My almost 5-year-old son loves mazes (he calls them maps). So when I saw these books, I just knew he would love them! I wasn't expecting them to be as small as they are, but that was my fault for not looking at the product dimensions. He has already completed the mazes, and we ordered the product less than a month ago. I would consider them to be at a difficulty level appropriate for kids ages 4-7. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the binding. Because the book is so small, and the binding is so tight, it is difficult to get the book to lay flat-- I had to help him hold the book open while he completed his mazes.

5 year old grandson loves this.

Smaller than I expected but look cute.

These are tiny, perfect for outings and on the go keeping your kiddo calm, busy, focused, and out of trouble.
