As the sun began to rise, Lena Rose leaned against the cool pane of the bus window and gazed out at the familiar landscape of her life. I'm leaving my family and everything I know behind. She sighed, trying to keep her composure. Grieving the death of her Amish parents and the separation from her nine close-knit siblings, Lena Rose Schwartz consoles herself that her new life in Lancaster County won't be forever. Surely someday soon she will return to her beloved Michigan settlement, including her beau. But even as she holds on to hope for a reunion with those she loves most, she discovers that Lancaster holds charms of its own. Will she find the courage to open her heart to other possibilities?"Lewis's new book is a stand-alone Amish novel filled with charming characters and surroundings amid a heartwarming storyline of love, overcoming grief, and trusting God with our future."--Christian Market"A heartwarming and touching story of faith and family love. . . . Lena Rose and her family’s story is truly unbelievable. The way the siblings are separated sad. When Lena Rose goes to stay with her uncle and Mimi she is comforted by this wonderful couple. When Lena meets Arden she tries not to get close to him. The characters in this book are all very special people. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

This author won me to Amish reading with The Shunning and I have never stopped! Although I enjoy other authors, she is a favorite and this story proved her writing is still super. I enjoyed this story very much and am so sure others will, too.

Love Beverly Lewis books. This one is a little slower and sad than Ebb Tide but overall is a great read. No one writes Amish fiction like Beverly Lewis. She is the queen of Amish Fiction. Would highly recommend not just this one but all of her books if you want an authentic and accurate account of the Amish!

I love Beverly Lewis books and I think this one would be wonderful as well but my problem is different-the print is so light that it makes reading it with my 76 year old eyes a challenge. I didn't see anywhere to report this so am inserting it here. I compared it with other books I have (I read constantly) and the print is much lighter than any of my others. How to fix this??

I have always been a huge Beverly Lewis fan and have continued to pay for her expensive (especially the kindle prices) books. This book was like it was written by a beginning writer. It’s the first book of hers that I actually skipped entire pages because it was so boring.

Beverly Lewis this was a very heart warming story about a family who had such a horrible tragedy that tore them apart but prayers and their love for God brought them full circle. Such a heart warming story you certainly have a wonderful gift with your writing I think I have read every book you have written and I have never been disappointed Can't wait for the one.

Anyone else feel like Beverly Lewis is running out of ideas? I kept waiting for the plot to lead somewhere, but instead it just meandered around chapter after chapter. Lewis has written really poignant books dealing with grief but this was not one of them. A snooze, for sure and for certain.

Beverly has done a great job of helping us understand the feelings of loss and having your whole world turned upside down. This story shows how God has a plan for our life and if we wait on him, all well work out. The characters are so realistic you become a part of their lives. Thanks Beverly. Job well done.

I read once that smile was the first thing The producers of extreme makeover would evaluate prior to taking on a contestant on the show because they knew that if you couldn’t fix a smile not much else mattered. As a commercial photographer and a TV producer myself, I couldn’t agree more. I loved reading the experience of thousands of smiles fixed and made. I’m not orthodontist but can certainly appreciate Excellence in a field when I see it. I highly recommend this book for anybody interested in smiling.

Dr. Frost using the Damon System transforming lives! Great read showing the art of Orthodontics done by the VanGogh of Orthodontica

Granted, I haven't read this book in entirety (just follow Dr. Frost and others in this space). I cannot leave a book that addresses airway in pediatric patients with anything less than 5 stars, however. This is the biggest thing in ortho right now, and I wanted to clarify not just snoring... but also behavior that would show on a PSQ (Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire), such as attention-related issues - mimicking ADHD. 22 questions, throw out DK (don't know). Divide yes answers by yes/no. If greater than .33 then that's a positive result. Super simple - easy for parents to answer - from the University of Michighan. There are others, such as Epworth that are more for catching OSA - as opposed to more general sleep disordered breathing. Anyway, other such things to look for include lower tongue ties (can address by myofunctional therapy or if that isn't enough then medical intervention), family history of OSA / Snoring / potentially High Blood Pressure... literally, the list goes on! It is not a catch-all, but it sure seems like it. Lastly - though not always!! airways for a class 2 occlusion is generally more constricted than class 1 than class 3. There are many research sources on this, but I wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Quintero's compilation, "The Link between Airways, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Faces". We can all work together to share these important messages. By the way, I'm not a doctor, so please review all of this with your own research. Everything changes so quickly... Any orthodontists or dentist ought to consider getting involved in the upcoming launch of OrthoScience.com. There are few research articles out there... even a treatment video of Sebastian on Quintero's site with some treatment photos at the 2 minute mark. Additionally, Dr. Mike Bennett is sharing a case of a pediatric patient with DNA appliance. One targeted treatment is also the work started by the Mew doctors (John and Mike) & also by Bill Hang. We also find that early intervention orthodontics generally - to lesser & greater extents is beneficial. Dr. Derek Mahony has a phenominal interview on Right to Grow . org, among others. Bless you, Dr. Frost, for your conscientiousness & caring - taking time out of your busy practice to evangelize these important themes. I look forward to reading more, especially on airway (which I have not purchased yet - just read the "Look inside"). Impressed thus far!(Dr. Frosts smiles are nice and wide and I hold a personal opinion that a wider smile would allow for greater airspace - of course limited on the amount of widening possible for the mandible. Currently - partly substantiated - we'll see if that hold true. Of course, it also depends on the overall 3D assessment, including the site of minimum cross-sectional area, age of patient, equipment, skills of the orthodontist,...)

"The Artist Orthodontist" is easy to read, honest, entertaining, and very educational. Dr. Frost definitely knows what he's talking about, and I love the idea of the smile being more than just straight teeth. There are great quotes throughout the book, and so many pictures of real patient transformations.Dr. Frost created a beautiful smile for me, which included reducing significant gumminess without surgery. I didn't know this style of treatment was possible until I met Dr. Frost, and my before & after is amazing. I can't wait to see my children's transformations, and am confident they'll receive the best possible treatment because Dr. Frost takes everything into consideration, including airway and facial features!I will definitely share this book with friends and family, and believe it will empower better shopping, awareness and education - even for those who don't receive treatment from Dr. Frost.

This AMAZING book is all about touching and making a difference in people’s lives by the author Dr. Stuart Frost. You need not know dental or braces language to read this. It is well-written, an easy read and designed for everyone to understand the most advanced orthodontic treatment options - which goes ABOVE and BEYOND straightening teeth. This book is also highly recommended to other dental professionals as it is full of inspiring stories on how Dr. Frost’s patients went through transformation.. not only physically but also by becoming the best version of themselves after having a “Frostsmile Finish”.I am in New York City, and after reading this book, I will definitely be flying to Meza, Arizona for a consultation to have that Frostsmile myself!

WOW! There are so many reasons why this book deserves a 5 star review. For starters, I love how “reader friendly” it is. This book is very educational for not only just other orthodontist. I love how educating it is for future patients, mothers/fathers of patient’s, future dental students, high school students aspiring to be an orthodontist, and even clinical assistants that work in this field. It is so descriptive in such a captivating way. Any person that has no knowledge of orthodontics could easily read this book and by the end of it be just as passionate about orthodontics as dr Frost is. He has such a way of showing his amazing work, but in such a humble way. You can tell he truly wants others to be informed so they can give or get the best treatment possible. The way Dr Frost narrated his journey of starting from a young boy wanting to follow in the footsteps of his father, to now a world known orthodontist changing lives everyday is truly amazing.

If you're thinking about getting braces, READ THIS FIRST! With all of the "fix your teeth cheap and fast" options out there, it's nice to know someone is approaching orthodontics with an attitude that's best for the patient. It's rare to hear an orthodontist talk about facial aging, airway issues, and teeth and gum health when discussing treatment options for braces. Reading about some of Dr. Frost's patients opened my eyes to the damage an orthodontist can do just by pulling teeth or using too strong of forces from old technology. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself before choosing who is in charge of your smile transformation. You won't regret it.

I know some people who are treating this book as if it were the newest book of the Bible. Well, in fairness, it does contain some significant revelations, and it's a tale of good and evil. That's the good news. The bad news is that the book is (a) extremely disjointed and (b) full of extraneous information, some of it personal and some seemingly irrelevant. Thus, the book is longer than it should be, and the extraneous information muddles things up for no good reason. The basic story that Lewis tells is good; it's got good guys and not-so-good guys, financial chicanery and other things (sorry, no sex) that would be interesting on their own. And he certainly has a point - that our market system is rigged (a point with which I'm inclined to agree). But then he distracts us with lots of techno-jargon; the story of Goldman Sachs's role in prosecuting someone for stealing what seems to be public data that's of little use to him; and a weird discussion at the end about women bikers. (In fairness, the prosecution is not entirely irrelevant, but Lewis seems to be unsure whether to use it as a paradigm for Goldman's intrinsic evil or good, so it turns out to be unnecessary.)I've never been a big fan of Lewis; he's always struck me as being inordinately impressed with his own cleverness (not that he's not clever), and this book doesn't do anything to dispel my prejudices.Lastly, it's interesting (but another disappointment) that while Lewis praises his copy editor, I caught two rather obvious typos early on. I know he's a ragingly successful author, but really!

If you have been watching economic news this week, you will have heard that the British pound collapsed in a “flash crash.” Most news stories leave it at that. (I suspect that’s because they don’t know what a flash crash really is.) Put simply (and in Flash Boys Michael Lewis explains this recurring phenomenon quite simply) a flash crash is how high frequency traders use computers, multiple exchanges and time to abuse the rules. Now that I’ve summarized that, let me back up a second and deconstruct the sentence. First, what are the rules? In 2007, after brokers were found to have been abusing customers’ trust once too often, the government came out with what’s called Reg NMS. This regulation (and here I am just going to quote Michael Lewis directly because I don’t think I can say it any better than he did). Reg NMS mandated that brokers buy shares at the best price. “To define best price, Reg NMS relied on the concept of the National Best Bid and Offer. If an investor wished to buy 10,000 shares of Microsoft, and 100 shares were offered on the BATS exchange at $30 a share, while the full 10,000 listed on the other twelve exchanges were offered at $30.01, his broker was required to purchase the 100 shares at Bats before moving on to other exchanges.”This meant that anyone with a computer can see where a purchase is going to be made and for how much. So if you have a faster connection (and several exchanges where you can sell a few shares of a stock, you can already see how you can make money.) Sure, you won’t make a lot of money from any one trade. Maybe less than half a cent here and half a cent there. But that adds up. I know this from first-hand experience. The other day at work, I was trying to calculate what would the cost be of a service was excluded from a package of services. And my calculation kept being almost a billion off. I did it and re-did and re-did it every which way I could think of. I even pulled down my stats book to see if my math was off. Nothing. I got up and went for a cup of coffee just to take a break from this ridiculous problem and when I sat down again, I saw it. It was a rounding error. To be exact it was a rounding error in the one/thousandth decimal place. But I was dealing with billions of dollars and that rounding error made quite a difference. So yes, parts of pennies add up. But wait, there’s more. The way the best price is computed is when an exchange computes all the bids and offers on a particular stock. This computation is done by a government computer and if you know one thing about government, you will know that it takes years to upgrade computers. That means that if you have your own, faster computer you can “front-run” the official best price and sell and buy 100s of shares at the “real” best price. Sure it will be a “rounding error” but as I said before, those rounding errors matter. So a rule that was intended to create equity and transparency in the market in fact institutionalized inequality between the traders who had access to the super-fast computers and those who did not. Only the former would make money from these rounding errors. But wait, there is yet more. To make full use of Reg NMS you also need many different exchanges or dark pools and dark cables. And guess what, both exist. Dark cables are cables that are optimized for speed of transaction. Sure it’s a millisecond difference or even less but in that time you can get a lot of rounding errors. Dark pools are, in essence, proprietary exchanges. They exist to make it easier for institutional investors (like the folks to whom you entrust your pension and mortgage, for example) to trade in large blocks. So, for example if you have one million shares of Microsoft you want to sell (or buy) but don’t want your identity known, you would rather sell/buy those shares away from the glaring eye of the public transaction. Here’s the problem, if your are a high frequency trader, you (by definition) have a super-fast computer and access to dark cables. That means you can “ping” the many, many dark pools that have been set up. By some estimates, 40% of all trading is now done inside dark pools. And that in turn means you can know, well before the government-issued slow computers have finished calculating the best price what the real selling price is. That’s one heck of a rounding error in your pocket. And finally, to make all this work, you need volatility. All volatility means is that the price of something moves up and down a lot. And obviously if it does that, there is a lot more room for a high-frequency trader to essentially insert him/herself in the middle of that trade. Basically here’s the way it works. You want to buy those 10,000 shares of Microsoft for $30. There’s a dark pool that will sell 100 of them to you for that price. I, as a high-frequency trader, ping that dark pool, know what the price you’re willing to buy for is and all the other prices out there and where you will buy from next. So I go and buy the next batch of Microsoft shares that are selling (as you will recall at $30.01). Now, your broker, by law, has to come and buy the shares from me. Except I sell the shares now at $30.1001. And right there, in less than the blink of an eye I have made almost $10. And that’s from a mere 9,900 shares—a small trade. So what high-frequency traders do in effect is charge a tax for trading. And that tax (like most taxes) makes economic activity, in this case people’s willingness to trade to decrease. It also means that flash crashes, caused when a front-running computer algorithm gets too clever by half, are inevitable. In Flash Boys, Lewis explains all of this a little at a time. In some ways, the book reads like a great detective story. And like a great detective story, it is eminently readable because at its heart is a kind of hero: Brad Katsuyama. Brad sets out to hire a lot of computer programmers to beat the system. First he introduced Thor. This was a platform that enabled you to trade more slowly and then a brand new exchange called IEX (an exchange—and yes, it got the license to be an actual exchange) that did the same thing. The idea behind Thor and IEX seems counter-intuitive but in a high-frequency world it works. If you trade many thousands of shares per trade, then it makes sense that your order should arrive at all the exchanges/dark pools at the same time. That way no-one can ping/front-run you. You will not, in other words, be paying a tax on your trade. So to get the high-frequency traders out of the loop, you need to trade just slowly enough that your orders arrive at all exchanges at the same time. This is the story of how Brad and the motley crew he gathered around him came up with that idea, the push-back they initially got from the industry and how they eventually sold the industry, including Goldman Sachs, on the concept. It is a story well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

One of the things I enjoy about Lewis's writing is his ability to explain difficult and complicated subjects. This one on high speed stock trading was no exception. Even though I am in the financial services field, there are aspects of this topic that were totally mystifying. Glad to see I had a lot of company and glad to see steps are being taken to reduce the opportunity to pick your pocket when trading stocks. The techniques may be legal, but they are far from fair or ethical. I think this book is best suited for those with some background in finance or serious investors. An enjoyable read if your interest lies in this direction.

Well, maybe I don't love it. Maybe I like it. I am prejudiced. Michael Lewis is unmatched in being able to explain clearly some of the more complex machinations of the money markets. In this case, the issue is manipulation of the stock market by having better technology..and putting it close to trading floor. OK, I know that does not make much sense on the face of it, but read the book. But it is another way the large, programmatic traders can beat the little guy--and Lewis makes the point without it becoming a Message. The Canadians are heroes (and how often do you read that in a review of a Wall Street subject?) The market is generally unscrupulous. It is unlikely to be fixed (if it is 'fixable') so long as we don't understand it..and most of us do not. Michel Lewis is the guy who can explain everything.

When picking up this book, I had no idea that it would emotionally impact me the way it has. This book inspired me take the jump towards having passion in living. I needed this book in my life, and I didn't even know it. I have read all of Brene Brown's books, but the message in this book has changed me more than all of her books combined. This book is a must read for readers of all ages! I wish there was a way for me to buy a copy of this book to hand out to everyone that I encounter on a daily basis. The message of hope through confusion is something that all humans need to read. Honest and raw in a true Jason Reynolds' way!

I don't understand the hype of this book...? I bought it because I was feeling sentimental and thoughtful. This seemed perfect. However, I was really confused about darn near everything that was written. It didn't make a lot of sense, and was really repetitive. I read the whole thing in LITERALLY 10 minutes or less, and will never look at it again. Soooo...there's my two cents.

I wish I could gift a copy of this book to everyone. Whether I know them or not. It's not just a letter from the author, it's an inspiring reminder to keep fighting for your dreams. To never give up, especially when things are tough. Find a passion that ignites you like nothing else and let it drive and propel you from the inside out. It's also a reminder that we are all human and flawed and we fail. A lot. But we can't give up. I loved this book. So much. It's one of those books that delivers hope concisely, powerfully, unconventionally, unapologetically, and honestly. The hope is bone deep. I will read it over and over again. I'm passing it on to my teenage son. And then to my husband. And then slowly, but surely, to everyone I know who dares to dream, and especially to those, like me, who are sometimes scared to. Or who forget that dreaming makes life endlessly worth the fight. Thank you, Jason Reynolds, for putting your heart in these pages, I think it reminds us how similar we all are. Hope, doubt, perseverance - they make us undeniably human and that's such a beautiful, messy thing.

This book is amazing! I used it with groups of students in my afterschool program.I am always looking for ways to entice our students to read. Books by someone who can speak to their experience are a great help. Jason Reynolds knows how to pack a powerful message into a few words on an uncrowded page. All things that keep the reluctant reader engaged.Other adult staff read the book and immediately purchased their own copies.

I bought 5 books by Jason Reynolds. He is truly a gem, that will not disappoint you. Buy it!!!I bought a new book, but the book delivered to my home was used. That is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars.

What a great book. A lovely gift for those who love poetry, graduating high school or college, or a friend who is moving away. I love it.

Love, love, love.

Awesome author!

Review

"One of Tyler Cowen's Best Non-Fiction Books of 2018""One of Bloomberg Opinion's Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2018 (Stephen L. Carter)""Bryan Caplan raises an important question in [his] controversial new book, The Case Against Education. How much of the benefits of a degree comes from the skills you acquire in studying for it? And how much from the piece of paper at the end – what your degree certificate signals to employers about the skills and attributes you might have had long before you filled in a unviersity application form?"---Sonia Sodha, The Guardian"Would-be students and their parents are rethinking the assumption that a good life is impossible without an expensive degree--not to mention the chase for college admission that begins at kindergarten if not before. [This new book] may help to let out a little more air."---Naomi Schaefer Riley, Wall Street Journal"You probably won’t agree with everything he says . . . but his broadside is worth considering carefully given that the U.S. spends $1 trillion or so a year on education at all levels, more than the budget for defense."---Peter Coy, Bloomberg Businessweek"It is an excellent book, on an important topic. Beyond such cheap talk, I offer the costly signal of having based an entire chapter of our new book on his book. That’s how good and important I think it is. . . . Caplan offers plausible evidence that school functions to let students show employers that they are smart, conscientious, and conformist. And surely this is in fact a big part of what is going on."---Robin Hanson, Overcoming Bias"A book that America has needed for a long time. If we ever reach a turning point where most of us reject the idea that government should mandate and subsidize certain kinds of education, Bryan Caplan will have a lot to do with it."---George Leef, Forbes"Economist Bryan Caplan of George Mason University has crunched the data for years from every angle and argues devastatingly . . . that college is, for many of those who go there, a boondoggle."---Kyle Smith, National Review Online"Excellent argument by Bryan Caplan, but missed something central: convexity of trial-and-error & heuristic learning."---Nassim Nicholas Taleb, "It's like the case against parenting's role in shaping children: I don't want to believe it, but the data force you take it seriously. Good book."---Charles Murray,

From the Back Cover

"Few would disagree that our education system needs reform. While most call for more--more government subsidies, more time in school, more students attending college--Caplan provocatively argues for less. The Case against Education urges a radical rethinking about why we've been unsuccessful to date--and why more of the same won't work."--Vicki Alger, Independent Institute "Bryan Caplan has written what is sure to be one of the most intriguing and provocative books on education published this year. His boldly contrarian conclusion--that much schooling and public support for education is astonishingly wasteful, if not counterproductive--is compelling enough that it should be cause for serious reflection on the part of parents, students, educators, advocates, and policymakers."--Frederick Hess, American Enterprise Institute "You doubtless asked many times in school, ‘When am I going to use this?' Bryan Caplan asks the same question, about everything taught prekindergarten through graduate school, and has a disturbing answer: almost never. Indeed, we'd be better off with a lot less education. It's heresy that must be heard."--Neal McCluskey, Cato Institute "The Case against Education is a riveting book. Bryan Caplan, the foremost whistle-blower in the academy, argues persuasively that learning about completely arbitrary subjects is attractive to employers because it signals students' intelligence, work ethic, desire to please, and conformity--even when such learning conveys no cognitive advantage or increase in human capital."--Stephen J. Ceci, Cornell University "This book is hugely important. The Case against Education is the work of an idiosyncratic genius."--Lant Pritchett, author of The Rebirth of Education: Schooling Ain't Learning "Caplan deals provocatively and even courageously with an important topic. Readers will be disturbed by his conclusions, maybe even angry. But I doubt they will ignore them."--Richard Vedder, author of Going Broke by Degree: Why College Costs Too Much

#30,094 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was both validated and distressed by this book: validated because I agree that the value of school comes not from its usefulness but from the signals it sends, and distressed because I disagree with his interpretation of what those signals mean. Like Caplan, I believe our obsession with academic success is toxic, both for individuals and society. I see academic credentials as a perverse currency, necessary for gaining acceptance in a culture that believes they have real value. But inflation is rendering them less and less valuable, requiring more and more education for those who want to distinguish themselves from those below. And that's part of the problem - the goal of education is almost always to distinguish oneself from those below while gaining acceptance from those above. It is the engine of a hierarchical culture that conditions belonging on judgment of worth. It is an incredibly inefficient and oppressive system for transferring real knowledge and skills that monopolizes our lives with counter productive behavioral conditioning and questionable moral assumptions. My discomfort with Bryan Caplan's interpretation of this problem is that he manages to tear apart the system, something I see as necessary, while preserving the status of the most academically accomplished as innately more intelligent, something I see as unforgivable. He managed to shore up the value of his own signal while tearing down the system it's based on. I'm appalled that people will take his statistics and his interpretation as evidence that college is appropriate for those intelligent enough to benefit from "transformative education" while vocational training is appropriate for everyone else.I've come to believe that most academic success is based on our need for respect and belonging. The people who get the furthest are the most motivated for its stamp of approval, and the most appalled at "ignorance". They tend to come from homes where education is framed as society's savior, and mistake its enormous reach as a sign of its benevolence. At least Caplan counters that old myth. The education system is filled with people who want good, meaningful lives and can't quite figure out what's missing. What's missing is a structure that supports the democratic ideals it claims to teach. Structurally, it's a self-serving, coercive system that claims a moral authority it has no right to, and serves goals it can't achieve. A compulsory system in which each of us is working to raise our status relative to the whole has division and inequality woven into its very fabric. A compulsory system that judges worth while constricting behavior prevents more growth than it fosters. That it focuses its judgments on a narrow band of intellectual abilities is a problem, but expanding its realm to vocational training, without removing its compulsion, just expands the scope of its damage. I agree with many of the damning facts Caplan exposes, but his interpretation is mired in the same screwed up measurement of human value that keeps the system running.

Everyone knows that college grads earn a lot more than high school grads. But why is that the case? Most people assume that it's because people learn a lot in college and the labor market rewards that knowledge with higher salaries. Caplan strongly disagrees, arguing that earning a college degree is mainly a signal to employers that you are a diligent and hard-working person who conforms to society's norms. In other words, employers don't expect that you've learned much in college and, as Caplan shows, most people don't!You can probably think of many objections to this argument and Caplan assesses all of them. I'm not entirely convinced of his conclusions, partly because it would require reading academic papers across a variety of disciplines to properly evaluate Caplan's argument. But, at the very least, he has raised the important question of whether much of the time and money that students, their parents, and the government lavish on college might be wasted.Although the book is grounded in the academic literature, it's mostly non-technical, and Caplan's discussion should be accessible to most readers. He writes in a light style and peppers his discussion with anecdotes from his own experience as a student and as a professor at George Mason.A book well worth reading!

Does the author of this extraordinary book leave anything out of his 43 pages of references? I think so. Paul Fussell, in his snarky and incomparable book, Class: A Guide Through the American Status System (1983), observed that although many more people were going to college today than, say, in 1940 when only 13 % of college-age kids attended college, "the number of young people really going to college will always be about 13 percent." Why? Because only that fraction attends top-rated colleges like Amherst and Smith or universities like Harvard or Yale as in days of old. What, Fussell asked, about the majority struggling today simply to "go to college" somewhere in the hinterlands "only to find their prolehood still unredeemed, and not merely intellectually, artistically, and socially, but economically as well?" Graduates of former state colleges or worse, now soi-disant universities, often find they have no economic advantage over their high school chums who have been installing solar panels or kitchen sinks instead of hitting the books. For them, as for most "college graduates," their four or six or eight years of schooling signals to prospective employers that they have in fact earned not a BA or BS, but a CIA, degree, what I call the Cast Iron Ass degree, evidence that a prospective employee will sit through and stand for any bullshit task no matter how demeaning or unrewarding. For most students college is a waste of time, but where you waste your time and with whom would seem to be important. Professor Caplan, however, discounts "who you know" at college (66), but he does admit that "going to Harvard...almost certainly puts you in an exclusive dating pool for life." (157) Incidentally, Caplan's book is also funny, but not as funny as the late Paul Fussell's. Read both!

It should be known that this is the first official published divine office for the Anglican Ordinariates following the Book of Divine Worship. The chief editor and organizer of this work is Monsignor Andrew Burnham. One thing of note for Msgr. Burnham, he came out of the English Anglo-Catholic Liturgical Movement that is all but gone in the Anglican Communion now that the Ordinariates exist. One of the by-products of the movement was an emphasis on the availability of options available in prayer and liturgy. So, that being the case, he presents the offices in (for the most part) continuity with the Book of Divine Worship. The options begin where he adds pages of notations, and supplemental prayers for the minor offices to be used in the Roman Liturgy of the Hours. The setup is very confusing indeed. The book could use about 6 ribbons to try to have all the correct places marked. I do wish this were laid out in a better fashion. The Kalendar and propers for feast days are included in this as well. I am glad that he still is using the Coverdale Psalter as that is my favorite. I do wish this were condensed a little to match the style of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, a beautiful treasure of uniformity in prayer. The best treasure Msgr. Burnham has included is a weekly supplement to the Office of Readings, with readings from the Caroline Divines, the Oxford Movement, and giants of the Anglican Patrimony. This was a good first step for updating the Ordinariate offices. I hope the American version that is going to be published soon will be a bit more simple and straightforward.

While difficult to navigate for those who are not used to the Book of Common Prayer, it is a true gem that a complete cycle of the Liturgy of the Hours from the Anglican tradition has been fully, and welcomingly, accepted into the Catholic Church and given the Imprimatur. Perhaps more significantly, it includes all the Coverdale Psalms and excerpts taken from English sermons and for optional post-Biblical readings. As would be expected, figures such as Newman are included, but so are non-converts such as Keble, Laud, Andrewes, Wilberforce, and Thomas Ken who are "generally judged by competent commentators as representing a Catholic-minded stream in Anglican theology and spirituality." (24) Truly this represents a far fuller "coming-home" for the Anglican tradition than might otherwise be expected. Let us hope the American and Australian Ordinariates complete their Prayer Books in like manner but with improved organization.

Very helpful for anyone interested in improving the quality of Anglican liturgy. This is an important reference for lay and clergy alike. Especially helpful for holy days and special feast days information. Great resource for developing liturgy. Highly recommend to all who prepare worship services regardless of denomination.

Dear Monsignor Andrew Burnham,Thank you so much for your work of the Customary. I am becoming familiar with it daily and feel so much at home with it. I am a member of The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of S. Peter but as there is no church or group for it in my area as yet, am a member of a Roman Catholic parish. I am so thankful for Benedict XVI for his provisions for us to be truly Catholic and yet save our Anglican heritage. Thank you so much for your untiring good work of the Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham, an historical, beautiful work.Sincerely yours, Ruth Heyder

This is an essential resource for members of the Ordinariates and a useful resource for everyone else. So buy it.
