I really felt like a dummy for convincing myself that I needed a book to teach me how to be a father, but was pleasantly surprised by all of the useful information in here! The book is written in an incredibly helpful, informative, and calming manner that enlightened me on what to expect when my wife is expecting. Though most of the information is very reassuring to me, there are sections where potential issues, dangers, or concerns are highlighted. I greatly appreciated the seriousness of these sections as it helped make the important stuff stick in my mind.Stop Googling and start reading this Dummies book immediately if you are going to be a father! All of those pregnancy boards and websites served only to get me worked up and concerned about everything that could (and probably would, as these websites imply) go wrong. The Dad's Guide to Pregnancy takes a more informative approach that is backed by data and research. I would be a giant stress ball if I relied on the internet for my prenatal information. The breakdown of sections is ideal, allowing you to get started no matter where your partner is at in the pregnancy. Part 1 focuses on everything pre-birth from deciding to have a baby to what you can do to prepare. It includes a great quick-look at what each trimester is going to be like. Part 2 is for those that are currently pregnant and goes into great depth about what changes both mom and dad will be experiencing, and what warning signs to look out for. There is great insight into what the woman is going through and how the dad can be a good partner along the way. Part 3 delves into labor and delivery, and tells dad to basically do whatever mom wants. Be there to help her any way you can and stay out of the way when she wants you to. Part 4 is the scary stuff that tells you just about everything that can go wrong after birth, but how to deal with it the right way. Surprisingly reassuring! Part 5 is for mom, essentially. You learn how to be a good father to the mother and how dads can stop being on the sideline and really bond with their child. This book provides an unbiased view of pregnancy from the father's prospective and focuses on parental choice. There is no shaming of women that can't or choose not to breastfeed, or parents that choose an alternative birthing method. Though the book has not changed our plans to gung-ho work at breastfeeding and give birth in a traditional hospital, the informative explanations of the different feeding and birthing options available was nice. I had no idea what a doula was before reading this book, but am glad that I do now. Knowing that you can have an advocate for your birthing wishes present during the birth is something to consider! You don't know what you don't know until you later know it, and this book showed me that I didn't know a ton.Don't try and figure everything out on your own. This Dummies guide is a perfect companion for every dad-to-be, and should probably be given to each dad by their doctor during the first prenatal visit.
Bought this for my husband and also myself. It's helped solve some arguments over my mood swings and hormones lol. It's nice to have a book to refer to instead of Googling everything and seeing a million different answers with essays and responses to simple questions. Has some pictures and explains everything simply and calmly. Covers a wide range of topics and walkthroughs
My husband never reads.... and he has been enjoying this book at night before bed. Information is informative and simplistically explained. I love that he is able to follow in this journey alongside me, understanding exactly what is happening. He is asking questions and really being engaged. Highly recommend this book!
This book was very helpful(about as helpful as possible). Becoming a new father is riddled with emotions that you may not even understand is happening at the time. If you think you may need/like this book I suggest picking it up. Worth it.
Purchased this book for my son-in-law since he had been so anxious about the new baby on the way. My daughter reports he read the entire book in a couple days and found it to be very helpful; in fact he was able to share with my daughter helpful information that was missing from her pregnancy books. The book has practical information and has made him feel more prepared for their little guy who will be arriving soon.
Stopped reading it halfway through my wife's pregnancy because I didn't find out any more helpful than Google
Husband can't wait to read this! However, I purchased used (much cheaper!!) and there is some writing in it- doesn't bother us at all, but if it was a gift for someone you may want to buy new.
I got this for my boyfriend when we found out we were expecting! I have 2 already and this is his first so I was ok with reading the normal what to expect when your expecting book, but I wanted something more for the male. I have not read the book myself yet but he says it is good and gives the information he feels he needs.
